India

Overview

India, officially known as the Republic of India, is a country located in South Asia. It holds the distinction of being the seventh-largest country in the world by land area and is the most populous country on the planet. Since gaining independence in 1947, India has also stood as the world's most populous democracy, a nation defined by its vast scale and diversity.

Geography and Borders

India occupies a strategic position on the Indian subcontinent, bounded by significant bodies of water on three sides. The Indian Ocean lies to the south, the Arabian Sea borders the country to the southwest, and the Bay of Bengal lines the coast to the southeast. This extensive coastline has historically shaped India's role in maritime trade and cultural exchange.

On land, India shares borders with several neighboring countries. To the west lies Pakistan, while the northern frontier is shared with China, Nepal, and Bhutan. To the east, India borders Bangladesh and Myanmar. This wide array of neighbors reflects India's central location within South Asia and its connections to both South and Southeast Asia.

Island Territories and Maritime Neighbors

Beyond its mainland borders, India's geographic reach extends into the Indian Ocean, where it lies in proximity to the island nations of Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Additionally, India administers the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a remote archipelago that shares maritime boundaries with Myanmar, Thailand, and Indonesia. These islands underscore India's connections not only to South Asia but also to the wider Southeast Asian region.
