Cuttack is a city in India that serves as the headquarters of the Cuttack district. It is the second largest city and the former capital of the Indian state of Odisha. The city also functions as the judicial capital of the state, housing the Orissa High Court and several other state government offices.
The name of the city originates from the Odia and Sanskrit term Kataka, which translates to "the fort." This is a reference to the ancient Barabati Fort, around which the city initially developed. The Government of Odisha approved the restoration of this native spelling to reflect authentic Odia phonetics.
Cuttack is recognized by two primary nicknames: the Millennium City and the Silver City. These titles refer to its 1,000-year history and its famous silver filigree works, respectively.
