Darjeeling is a city situated in the northernmost region of the Indian state of West Bengal. Located within the Eastern Himalayas at an average elevation of 2,045 metres (6,709 ft), it occupies a geographically significant position bordered by several international and regional boundaries.
The city is surrounded by Nepal to the west, Bhutan to the east, and the Indian state of Sikkim to the north. Further north lies the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, while Bangladesh sits to the south and southeast. The majority of West Bengal is located to the south and southwest, connected to the Darjeeling region via a narrow tract of land. A prominent geographical feature of the area is Kangchenjunga, the world's third-highest mountain, which rises to the north and is visible on clear days.
