Bhubaneswar is the capital and largest city of the Indian state of Odisha, situated in the Khordha district. While the modern city was formally established in 1948, the history of the surrounding areas dates back as far as the 1st century BCE. The suburban region, particularly the old town, has been historically referred to as Chakra Khetra and Ekamra Khetra.
The city is widely known as the "Temple City" due to its high concentration of temples, many of which are Kalingan structures dating from the 6th to the 13th century CE. It serves as a confluence of Hindu, Buddhist, and Jain heritage. Along with Puri and Konark, Bhubaneswar forms the "Swarna Tribhuja," one of the most visited tourist destinations in Eastern India.
In contemporary times, Bhubaneswar has developed into a significant national hub for information technology (IT), sports, and tourism.
