Durgapur is a major industrial hub and planned urban agglomeration located in the Paschim Bardhaman district of West Bengal, India. Situated on the northern bank of the Damodar river, the city was developed in 1955 by Bidhan Chandra Roy, Joseph Allen Stein, and Benjamin Polk.
The city is a primary center for steel production and train wheel manufacturing in India, earning it the nickname "Steel Backbone of Industrial Bengal." In recent years, Durgapur has also expanded to become a hub for the country's IT industry. Additionally, it is notable as the only city in eastern India to possess an operational dry dock.
