Etawah, also known as Ishtikapuri, is a city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, it serves as the administrative headquarters for the Etawah District. The city is geographically positioned approximately 324 km southeast of New Delhi and 129 km east of Agra.
The city is notable for being the confluence of the Yamuna and Chambal rivers. Historically, it served as an important center during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. During medieval times, the area was ruled by various powers, including the Sultans of Delhi and the Mughals, as well as the Tomaras of Gwalior from the late 13th to early 16th centuries.
With a population of 256,838, Etawah is the 26th most populous city in Uttar Pradesh and ranks as the 180th most populous city in India. The district it governs is divided into six revenue divisions: Etawah, Bharthana, Jaswantnagar, Saifai, Chakarnagar, and Takha.
