Coimbatore, also known as Kovai, is a metropolitan city located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the banks of the Noyyal River and surrounded by the Western Ghats, it serves as the administrative capital of the Coimbatore District.
The city is administered by the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation, which was established in 1981. According to the 2011 census, Coimbatore is the second largest city in Tamil Nadu after Chennai and ranks as the 16th largest urban agglomeration in India.
