Etawah, also known as Ishtikapuri, is a city located in the state of Uttar Pradesh, India. Situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, it serves as the administrative headquarters for the Etawah District. The city is positioned approximately 324 km southeast of New Delhi and 129 km east of Agra.
The city is notable for being the confluence of the Yamuna and Chambal rivers and served as an important center during the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Historically, Etawah was ruled by various powers including the Sultans of Delhi and the Mughals; significantly, it was governed by the Tomaras of Gwalior from the late 13th century to the early 16th century.
With a population of 256,838, Etawah is the 26th most populous city in Uttar Pradesh and ranks as the 180th most populous city in India. The surrounding district is organized into six revenue divisions: Etawah, Bharthana, Jaswantnagar, Saifai, Chakarnagar, and Takha.
