Coonoor, also known as Kunnur, is a municipal town and taluk located in the Nilgiris District of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Situated on the Nilgiri plateau, the town is situated within the Jackatalla valley and is surrounded by wooded hills. As of 2011, the population of the town was recorded at 45,494.
The town serves as a significant geographical point at the head of the Coonoor Ghat, which is the primary pass connecting the Nilgiris to the plains. It is located approximately 363 miles (584 km) by rail from Chennai and 12 miles (19 km) from Ooty.
