Eluru is a city located in the southeastern part of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It serves as the district headquarters for Eluru district and functions as the mandal headquarters for the Eluru mandal within the Eluru revenue division. Situated on the banks of the Tammileru River, it is one of the 14 municipal corporations in the state.
Historically known by names such as Ellore and Helapuri, the city possesses roots dating back to the second century CE. It was a prominent town under Qutub Shahi rule in the 16th century before falling under Mughal control in the 17th century. In the 18th century, it became part of the Nawab of Hyderabad's dominions and was later incorporated into the Madras Presidency during British India, where it served as the capital for Northern Circars.
According to the 2011 Census of India, the city had a population of 214,414, while the Eluru Urban Development Authority reported a population of approximately 2,760,160. The city's modern identity was significantly shaped by administrative and infrastructural developments established during the British era.
