Dāvanagere is a city and taluka located in the central region of the southern Indian state of Karnataka. It serves as the administrative headquarters for the Davangere district, which was established in 1997 when it was separated from the former undivided district of Chitradurga for administrative convenience. The city currently ranks as the seventh largest city in the state.
Historically recognized as a major cotton hub, the city was formerly known as the "Manchester of Karnataka" due to its textile trade supported by regional weaving centers. In contemporary times, the local economy is primarily dominated by the agro-processing and education industries. Geographically situated at the center of the state, Davangere is also noted for its diverse culinary traditions, which feature a variety of dishes from across Karnataka, most notably its aromatic benne dose.
