Delhi, officially known as the National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi, is a megacity and a union territory in India. It contains New Delhi, which serves as the capital of the country. The territory covers an area of 1,484 square kilometres and straddles the Yamuna river, though it is primarily spread to the west of the river's right bank.
The region shares borders with the state of Uttar Pradesh to the east and the state of Haryana in the remaining directions. Delhi was designated as a union territory on November 1, 1956, and later became the National Capital Territory in 1995. According to the 2011 census, the population of the city proper exceeded 11 million, while the total population of the NCT was approximately 16.8 million.
