Overview
Puerto Rico, officially known as the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, is a self-governing Caribbean archipelago that exists as an unincorporated territory of the United States. Rather than being a fully independent nation, it holds the unique designation of a "commonwealth," giving it a distinct political status within the North American region. The territory is located approximately 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Florida, positioned between the Dominican Republic to the west, part of the Greater Antilles, and the U.S. Virgin Islands to the east, part of the Lesser Antilles.
Geography and Islands
Puerto Rico is not just a single island but an archipelago made up of one main island and several smaller surrounding islands. Among the most notable of these smaller islands are:

Population and Administrative Divisions
Puerto Rico is home to approximately 3.2 million people, making it one of the more densely populated territories in the Caribbean. For administrative purposes, the territory is divided into 78 municipalities. The most populous of these is San Juan, which also serves as the capital. Beyond the capital itself, many of the next most populous municipalities are found within the greater San Juan metropolitan area, reflecting the concentration of population and economic activity around the capital region.
Language
Spanish and English are both recognized as official languages of the Puerto Rican government. However, in daily life and culture, Spanish is the predominant language spoken by the majority of residents. English maintains an official role largely due to Puerto Rico's political relationship with the United States, but visitors and residents alike will find that Spanish is the primary medium of communication across the islands.
