Levittowns are six large suburban housing developments located in the United States. They were established by William J. Levitt and his company, Levitt & Sons, following World War II to provide housing for returning white veterans and their families.
These communities served as alternatives to cramped apartments and central city locations. The development of these neighborhoods was supported by the Veterans Administration and the Federal Housing Administration (FHA), which guaranteed that qualified veterans could purchase homes at a fraction of typical rental costs. Notably, Levittown housing maintained racial covenants that explicitly excluded non-White buyers from purchasing property.
