Aguadilla is a city and municipality located at the northwestern tip of Puerto Rico. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north and west, situated north of Aguada, east of Isabela, and south of Moca. The municipality is organized into 15 barrios and includes the area known as Aguadilla Pueblo.
The history of the settlement's founding dates back to the late 18th century. While the area was inhabited and known as Aguadilla before 1770, Luis de Córdova began the construction of a new church and initiated proceedings to become an independent village in 1775. Although some records cite 1775 as the founding date, other historical accounts by Dr. Agustín Stahl suggest the town was officially founded in 1780.
Aguadilla serves as a principal city and forms the core of the Aguadilla-Isabela-San Sebastián Metropolitan Statistical Area. It remains a significant geographical and administrative hub within the northwestern region of the island.
