Niger

Overview

Niger, officially the Republic of the Niger, is a landlocked country located in West Africa. As a unitary state, it shares borders with several nations, positioning it at a crossroads of North and West African cultures and geography.

Geography and Borders

Niger is bordered by an unusually large number of neighboring countries, reflecting its central position within the region. To the northeast lies Libya, while Chad borders it to the east. Nigeria sits along its southern border, and Benin and Burkina Faso are located to the southwest. Mali borders Niger to the west, and Algeria lies to the northwest.

The country covers a vast land area of almost 1.27 million square kilometers (about 490,000 square miles). This makes Niger the sixth-largest country in Africa by land area. Notably, it is the largest landlocked country in West Africa and the second-largest landlocked nation on the entire African continent, trailing only Chad in size.

Much of Niger's territory is dominated by desert terrain. Over 80% of the country's land area lies within the Sahara Desert, shaping much of its climate, landscape, and the distribution of its population.

Population and Society

Niger has a population of approximately 25 million people. The population is predominantly Muslim, and this religious identity plays a significant role in the country's cultural and social fabric.

Given the harsh desert conditions covering most of the country, the population is not evenly distributed across Niger's territory. Instead, most residents live in concentrated clusters located in the southern and western parts of the country, where conditions are more conducive to settlement and agriculture.

Capital City

The capital of Niger is Niamey, which is situated in the southwest corner of the country. Niamey's location along the Niger River—from which the country takes its name—has historically made it an important hub for trade, transportation, and governance.
