Bolivia

Overview

Bolivia, officially known as the Plurinational State of Bolivia, is a landlocked country situated in the central part of South America. It is known for its remarkably diverse landscapes, ranging from towering Andean peaks to vast tropical lowlands, making it one of the most geographically varied nations on the continent.

Geography

Bolivia's geography is broadly divided into two main regions: the Andean region to the west and tropical lowlands to the east and north. This variation gives rise to a wide array of environments and climates within the country's borders.

This combination of ecosystems means Bolivia hosts a wide range of biomes and climates, from cold, arid highlands to humid, tropical lowland forests.

Borders

As a landlocked nation, Bolivia shares borders with five countries:

Government and Capitals

Bolivia has a distinctive governmental structure divided between two major cities. La Paz serves as the seat of government, housing the executive, legislative, and electoral branches. Meanwhile, Sucre holds the title of constitutional capital and is home to the judiciary branch of government. This division of governmental functions between two cities is a notable feature of Bolivia's political organization.

Population and Cities

While the majority of Bolivia's population and urban centers are concentrated in the Andean region, the country's largest city and principal industrial center is Santa Cruz de la Sierra. Interestingly, Santa Cruz is located not in the highlands but in the eastern tropical lowlands, reflecting the growing economic importance of this lowland region in recent decades.
