Tarija, also known as San Bernardo de la Frontera de Tarixa, is a city located in southern Bolivia. Founded in 1574, it serves as the capital and largest city within the Tarija Department. As of 2013, the city had a recorded population of 234,442.
The region features a semi-arid climate characterized by generally mild temperatures, distinguishing it from the harsh cold of the Altiplano and the humid heat of the Amazon Basin. The city serves as a transportation hub with an airport providing regular service to major Bolivian cities, including the capital, La Paz, and a regional bus terminal for domestic and international travel.
