Sucre, officially known as La Ilustre y Heroica Sucre, is the de jure capital city of Bolivia and serves as the capital of the Chuquisaca Department. Located in the south-central region of the country, it ranks as the sixth most populous city in Bolivia. Historically, the city has been known by several names over the centuries, including La Plata, Charcas, and Chuquisaca.
Situated at an elevation of 2,790 meters (9,150 feet), Sucre is the second-highest capital city in the world, surpassed only by Quito. This high altitude results in a subtropical highland climate characterized by cool temperatures throughout the year. The surrounding region features a predominantly Quechua background with additional influences from Aymara communities.
