Moldova

Overview

Moldova, officially known as the Republic of Moldova, is a landlocked country located in Eastern Europe. It covers an area of 33,843 square kilometers (13,067 square miles) and is home to a population of approximately 2.38 million people. Despite its relatively small size, Moldova occupies a significant position in the region, bordered by two much larger neighbors.

Geography and Borders

Moldova shares its borders with Romania to the west and Ukraine to the north, east, and south. As a landlocked nation, it has no direct access to the sea, which shapes much of its economic and geopolitical character. One of the more complex aspects of Moldova's geography is the presence of Transnistria, an unrecognised breakaway state situated across the Dniester River along the country's eastern border with Ukraine. This region operates outside the control of the central Moldovan government, adding a layer of political complexity to the country's territorial landscape.

Government and Political Structure

Moldova functions as a parliamentary democratic republic, a system of governance in which the executive branch derives its legitimacy from and is accountable to the legislature. This structure places significant power in the hands of the parliament, which plays a central role in shaping national policy and overseeing the government.

Capital and Major City

The nation's capital is Chișinău, which also holds the distinction of being Moldova's largest city. Beyond its administrative role as the seat of government, Chișinău serves as the country's primary cultural and commercial hub, drawing together the nation's economic activity, artistic life, and social development.
