Getting Around Sapporo
Sapporo's well-planned grid layout makes navigation straightforward for visitors. The city is divided by Ō-Dōri (Big Street), which runs east-west and separates north from south, and by Sōsei-Gawa (Creation River), which divides east from west. This logical organization means addresses are clearly marked at intersections, helping you orient yourself as you explore.
Public Transport Overview
Sapporo offers a comprehensive public transportation network including subway, streetcar, buses, and JR trains. Two smart cards are widely used: JR Hokkaido's Kitaca and the Sapporo City Transportation Bureau's SAPICA. If you're visiting from elsewhere in Japan, major cards like Suica, PASMO, or ICOCA work seamlessly with Kitaca, so you may not need to purchase a separate card.
The Subway System
Sapporo has three subway lines that all converge at Ōdōri Station in the city center. The Namboku Line runs north-south, the Tōzai Line runs east-west along Odori, and the Tōhō Line follows a C-shaped curve from northeast to southeast. Single fares are charged by distance.
Several ticket options are available. Day passes offer good value for sightseeing: on weekends and public holidays, the Donichika-Kippu allows unlimited subway travel for a low daily rate. Weekday day passes cost slightly more. A combined pass for buses, subways, and streetcars is also available. The simplest approach for casual trips is a stored value card, which you can reload as needed.
Streetcar Service
A streetcar line runs along the southwestern side of the city, connecting to the subway at Susukino station. While of limited utility for many visitors, it serves useful stops including the Chuo Library and the Mt. Moiwa Ropeway access point. It can be particularly helpful in winter when walking icy paths is challenging.
Buses and Intercity Connections
Buses operate throughout Sapporo and connect to most points across Hokkaido. The main bus terminal is located next to Bus Center-Mae station on the subway Tōzai line. Express buses link Sapporo to surrounding areas and more distant towns, offering an economical alternative to trains for some routes. Bus fares can be paid with the same smart cards and passes used on the subway and streetcar.
JR Trains Within Sapporo
JR above-ground trains provide reasonably priced service within Sapporo and to surrounding areas. Trains operate on fixed schedules and are a good option for airport travel and regional trips.
Walkability
Sapporo is walkable, particularly in the central grid-planned area. The logical street layout and marked intersections make independent exploration accessible. In winter, however, snow and ice may affect walking conditions, making the streetcar a more practical option in some cases.
Getting from the Airports to the City
New Chitose Airport
Most international flights and inter-island services arrive at New Chitose Airport, located southeast of the city in Chitose. The most convenient option is the JR Hokkaido Airport Rapid train, which runs frequently from the airport to Sapporo Station and takes around 45 minutes. The fare is affordable.
Limousine buses are also available, running to several downtown destinations with fares starting from a modest rate. Door-to-door shuttle van services are another option for those preferring direct hotel pickup.

Okadama Airport
Okadama Airport is smaller and more centrally located than New Chitose, serving regional Hokkaido flights and limited service to other parts of Japan. If you arrive here, you'll be closer to central Sapporo, though New Chitose handles most visitors' arrivals.
Rail Passes and Advance Planning
If you're traveling from outside Hokkaido, consider JR rail passes that cover travel to and within the region, which can offer savings on train fares. Seat reservations are essential for limited express trains, particularly the Hokuto services from Hakodate. Book these in advance when possible to ensure availability.
