Start at Odori Park, Where the City Holds Its Calendar
You step off the subway at Odori and the park opens up in a long green band through the middle of Sapporo, running block by block from 1-chome westward. This is where the city stages almost everything: the Lilac Festival in late May, the YOSAKOI Soran dance festival in June, SAPPORO CITY JAZZ / PARK JAZZ LIVE in mid-July, the Snow Festival in February. Sports Day is a national holiday observed in October, and while Sapporo's official event calendar does not list a specific Sports Day programme, the pattern of the city is reliable: when a public holiday arrives, Sapporo uses Odori Park. Walk the length of it in the morning, watch what is being set up, and let the park tell you what the day holds.
Markets and Street Food Around the Station and Susukino
Between Odori and JR Sapporo Station, the underground walking concourse and the streets around Kita 4-jo to Minami 4-jo form a continuous commercial spine. This is where you eat on a holiday: seafood bowls, soup curry, grilled Hokkaido lamb, soft-serve made with local milk. Susukino, the district running from Minami 4-jo to Minami 7-jo in Chuo-ku, keeps its restaurants and izakaya open through holidays and is the densest concentration of eating and drinking in the city. The Nijo Market, near Odori, is the morning stop for crab, uni and salmon roe. Go early; the good stalls sell down by midday.
What Sapporo Actually Puts On in Autumn
Sports Day itself is a national holiday, and Sapporo's autumn calendar fills around it with events that are confirmed and recurring. Plan your trip so the holiday sits inside one of these:
- Sapporo International Short Film Festival and Market — October 23–25, 2026, at Satsugeki dinos cinemas. Three days of screenings and a market, indoors and easy to walk into.
- Sapporo White Illumination — from November 20, 2026 through March 14, 2027. The lights go up across Odori Park (1–5-chome), Ekimae dori (Kita 4-jo to Minami 4-jo), Minami 1-jo dori (Minami 1-jo Nishi 1–3-chome), Sapporo Kita 3-jo Plaza (Akapla), and the JR Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza. If your visit runs into late November, the switch-on turns the whole centre into a lit walking route.
- German Christmas Market in Sapporo — November 20 to December 25, 2026, at Odori Park 2-chome, with satellite venues at Sapporo Television Tower, the underground walking area in front of Sapporo Station, and Sapporo Factory. Mulled wine, stalls, and a reason to keep moving between the sites.
The larger festivals that define Sapporo's year — the Snow Festival in February, the Lilac Festival in late May, YOSAKOI Soran in June, the Hokkaido Shrine Festival in mid-June, the Pacific Music Festival in July, and the Hokkaido Marathon in late August — are the city's anchors. If your Sports Day trip can flex, build it around one of those instead of the holiday alone.
Day Trips Within Reach of the Holiday
Otaru is a short train ride northwest and worth a full day: the canal and the former Temiya railway line host the Otaru Snow Light Path each February, but the town's streets, warehouses and seafood run year-round. Farther out, Lake Shikotsu in Chitose city holds the Chitose and Lake Shikotsu Ice Festival in early-to-late February, with hot springs on the shore. In winter, the Sapporo Bankei Ski Area at Bankei 410, Chuo-ku, hosts the Sapporo Craft Beer Forest in early-to-mid July and is a ski hill the rest of the cold season. The Rising Sun Rock Festival takes over a stage next to Tarugawa Pier at the New Port of Ishikari, in Zenibako 5-chome, Otaru, each August 13–14.
When to Go and What to Wear
Sports Day sits in the autumn window, which in Sapporo means cool mornings, clear skies and the first turning leaves. Bring a light jacket and walkable shoes; the city is flat and best covered on foot between Odori, Susukino and the station. If you push your trip into late November, add a proper coat — the illumination season runs from November 20 and the temperatures drop with it. Book accommodation near Odori or the station so the park, the markets and the underground concourse are all within a short walk.
Sapporo rewards the traveller who arrives without a fixed schedule and lets the holiday decide the day. Check the official Sapporo event calendar before you book, pick the autumn or winter window that matches what you want to see, and give yourself at least three nights — one for the park, one for Susukino and the markets, one for Otaru or the hills. Start with the dates, then build the rest around them.
