Stand on Ekimae-dori as the Lights Come On
At 16:30 on a December afternoon the sky over Sapporo is already going navy, and that is the moment to be walking the station-front boulevard. Ekimae-dori runs roughly 1.5 km from Kita 4 to Minami 4, strung with around 220,000 LEDs, and it stays lit until February 11 — long after the Christmas crowds have gone home. Start at the Sapporo Station South Exit Plaza, where the lights come on at sunset and stay on until midnight all season, then walk south with the traffic and the commuters and let the display pull you toward Odori. The Sapporo White Illumination is Japan's oldest event of its kind, first staged here in 1981, and the 2026–27 edition is the 46th. Every venue is free and ungated — these are public streets, parks and plazas, so you simply walk in.
Drink Mulled Wine at the Munich Christmas Market
Odori Park blocks 1 and 2 host the Munich Christmas Market from November 20 to December 25, the 25th edition of the event and a fitting one for a city twinned with Munich. It runs 11:00–21:00 with last order at 20:45, so this is a daytime and early-evening affair rather than a late-night one; entry is free. Go for mulled wine and sausages, and for the stalls of wooden ornaments and stollen — the kind of shopping you can do with a cup in one hand. Because it closes on Christmas Day, treat the market as your December anchor and the rest of the illumination as what carries you into the new year.
Follow the Light Trail Through the City
- Odori Park (Odori Nishi 3–5): the main site, with light artworks of various sizes among the trees, lit November 20 – December 25, 2026.
- Minami 1-jo dori (Minami 1-jo Nishi 1–3): a 300 m tunnel of light threaded through 46 gingko trees, running November 20, 2026 – March 14, 2027 — the one to save for the deepest, coldest part of winter.
- Kita 3-jo Plaza "Akapla": lit from November 20, 2026 through March 14, 2027, with the switch-on timed to sunset rather than the clock.
- Nakajima Park: a seventh venue added for 2027, in the large park south of Susukino, planned for early-to-late January 2027 with details due around late October 2026. It has its own subway stop, Nakajima-Koen on the Namboku Line, two stops from Odori.
All venues switch on together on Friday, November 20, 2026, and close on different dates rather than one shared end. In the last season most venues ran 16:30–22:00, with late-December extensions to midnight at Odori, Ekimae-dori and Minami 1-jo dori; the 2026–27 hours are expected to be published around late October 2026. Displays may be switched off in severe weather, so if a section looks dark, keep walking — the next one usually is not.
Eat and Warm Up Between Venues
December lows in Sapporo average around −4.0 °C, and the snowpack builds to roughly 95 cm by February, so plan your evening in short outdoor bursts with warm stops in between. The Munich Christmas Market's mulled wine and sausages are the obvious mid-walk refuel, and the Odori underground car park sits directly beneath the park for anyone driving — 8:00–22:00, no overnight, ¥460 for the first hour then ¥230 per 30 minutes, with an after-16:00 rate of ¥230 for the first 30 minutes capped at ¥1,000 until 22:00. Note that the car park closes at 22:00, the same time the Odori lights go out. There is no event parking at the venues themselves. If you are renting, Hokkaido cars come with studless winter tires as standard from November 1 to May 5 at no extra charge. On foot, take short steps and put your weight on the whole sole — the crossings, heated-pavement edges and subway entrances are where the ice hides.
Time Your Trip Around the Two Endings
The shape of a Sapporo Christmas is set by two dates. November 20, 2026 is the joint switch-on, when every venue lights at once and the city is at its most festive but also its least snowy. December 25 is when both Odori Park and the Munich Christmas Market go dark — after that the market stalls are gone, but Ekimae-dori, Minami 1-jo dori, Akapla and the Station South Exit Plaza carry the illumination on into January, February and, at three of those sites, as far as March 14, 2027. Arriving in the first half of December gets you the market, the fullest light trail and the run-up to Christmas together; arriving in January gets you the new Nakajima Park display and far thinner crowds.
Check the official illumination pages in late October 2026, when the season's lighting hours and the Nakajima Park schedule are published, then book your flights and a hotel within walking distance of Odori or Sapporo Station — everything above is reachable on foot or by a two-stop subway ride, and the walk between them, in the cold, under the lights, is the point.
