Getting to Taiyuan
Visitors arriving by air can land at Taiyuan Wusu International Airport (TYN). The airport serves as a gateway for tourists visiting nearby landmarks such as Wu Tai Shan and Pingyao.
For those traveling by rail, the city is served by two primary hubs: Taiyuan Railway Station and Taiyuan South Railway Station. Notably, high-speed trains depart from the southern station.
Long-distance bus travel is also an option for reaching Taiyuan from surrounding cities like Beijing, Datong, Shijiazhuang, and Yan'an. A dedicated bus station is located on the south side of Yingze Dajie, situated between the train station and Bingzhou Lu. Additionally, minibuses operate directly from the train station parking lot to popular destinations including Datong, Pingyao, Shijiazhuang, and Wutaishan National Park.
Public Transportation within the City

- Metro: The metro system provides a convenient way to move through the city. Fares are structured based on distance, with costs reaching up to ¥6 depending on the length of your journey.
- Local Buses: The bus network is a highly affordable option for local travel, with fares as low as ¥1 per person. Specific routes serve key areas; for example, certain lines run along Yingze Dajie, connecting major landmarks such as the Shanxi Museum and the Coal Museum. Other specific routes connect transit hubs like the train station to regional bus stations (such as Jinnan) where onward travel to places like Pingyao is available.
- Taxis: Taxis are available for more direct point-to-point travel. While costs can vary, a standard trip from the train station to the Shanxi Museum typically involves a modest fare including a base flagfall.

Taiyuan's layout allows for various modes of movement depending on your destination. The city is situated along the Fen River, and many major landmarks are accessible via the main transit corridors. For travelers with luggage, it is common practice to follow the lead of locals when navigating bus routes between major hubs like the train station and regional bus stations.
