Getting Around Shenyang

Shenyang is a major city in northeast China with multiple transport options for visitors. The old city center in Shenhe District is walkable, but reaching outlying areas like Beiling or Dongling requires public transport or taxis. A good strategy is to pick up a city bus and area map at one of the train stations to help navigate unfamiliar areas.

Metro System

The Shenyang Metro provides the most reliable way to cross the city quickly. The system has three lines that serve different parts of the city. Line 1 runs east-west across the city and serves Shenyang Railway Station. Line 2 runs north-south and serves Shenyang North Railway Station. Line 9 runs in an L-shaped route, connecting the northwest, southwest, and southeast areas. Line 10 runs in an L-shaped route, connecting the northwest, southwest, and southeast areas. The metro connects conveniently with the main train stations, making it easy to transfer from intercity arrivals into the wider city.

Buses and Trams

Shenyang operates a comprehensive bus network, though it can be challenging to navigate without reading Chinese—which is why obtaining a map at the train stations is strongly recommended. Bus fares are affordable at ¥1-2 per journey. Major bus lines congregate around the train stations, and Bus 203 specifically connects the two main railway stations.

A tramway line also serves the city. Tramway Line 2 connects Shenyang Taoxian International Airport with the subway system, providing airport access via public transport.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are widely available throughout Shenyang. Meters start at ¥8 for the first 3 kilometers, then increase at ¥1.8 per kilometer. When getting in a taxi, look for one with a meter mounted on the dashboard that is easily visible from your seat—avoid taxis where the meter is positioned behind the gear shift, as drivers may manipulate fares more easily when the meter is out of your sight.

Airport Access

Shenyang Taoxian International Airport is located about 24 kilometers south of the city center. The most practical options for reaching downtown are:

Walkability

The old city center in Shenhe District is compact and walkable, with major sights accessible on foot. However, other popular areas such as Beiling or Dongling are spread out and require taking transport to reach them efficiently.
