Overview

Shenyang Metro is a rapid transit system serving Liaoning's capital city. As of January 2025, it operates 6 lines spanning 186.7 kilometres with 136 stations, making it one of mainland China's major subway networks. The system is operated by Shenyang Metro Group Co., Ltd. and handles approximately 849,000 passengers daily.

To ride the metro end to end, you purchase a ticket at a station entrance (either from a ticket window or self-service machine), proceed through the turnstile, and follow signage to your platform. Trains run between approximately 05:30 and 23:00. Once aboard, stay in your seat or hold the handrails; transfers between lines are straightforward and clearly marked within stations. Exit through designated doors when your station is announced.

The network

Shenyang's urban rail system consists primarily of the metro network, with a tram connection to Taoxian Airport. The metro comprises six lines:

In addition to metro services, Tramway Line 2 connects Shenyang Taoxian International Airport with the metro system, allowing transfers to reach downtown in just over an hour.

Shenyang also has a comprehensive bus network, with fares typically ¥1–2 per journey. Taxis are widely available with meters starting at ¥8 for 3 km, then ¥1.8 per kilometre.

Tickets & fares

Fares are distance-based. Single journeys cost approximately 2–8 yuan depending on the number of stops. Specific fare bands are: 2 yuan for up to 8 stops, 3 yuan for 9–12 stops, and 4 yuan for 13 or more stops (prices are approximate and subject to change).

You can purchase tickets at staffed ticket windows or via self-service machines located in every station. Tickets are single-journey passes valid for one trip only. The metro does not appear to offer widely publicized tourist day passes in the available information; visitors typically purchase individual journey tickets as needed.

Payment is made in cash (Chinese yuan) at ticket windows or machines. Some stations may accept contactless payment cards or mobile payment via local apps, but this should be verified at your station of entry.

From the airport

Shenyang Taoxian International Airport is located approximately 24 km south of the city centre. Tramway Line 2 provides a direct connection from the airport to the Shenyang Metro system. With the transfer to the subway, the journey into downtown takes just over one hour.

Alternatively, an airport shuttle bus runs frequently from the airport to the main China Northern Airlines ticket office (117 Zhonghua Road) in the city centre and returns to the airport. Taxis are also available at the airport.

Etiquette & customs

While specific etiquette rules are not detailed in the available sources, standard Chinese metro courtesy applies:

Survival terms

Obtain a printed metro map at either railway station or your hotel, as it remains the most reliable way to navigate when you do not read Chinese characters fluently.
