Getting Around Calgary
Calgary is a sprawling prairie city with a well-developed transportation network. Visitors have several options for moving around, from the efficient light rail system to buses, taxis, and ride-hailing services. The city has become increasingly walkable in recent years, particularly in inner neighbourhoods, though many areas remain car-oriented.
The CTrain Light Rail System
The CTrain is Calgary's primary rapid transit system and is operated by Calgary Transit. The light rail network connects multiple areas of the city with stations throughout, with all main lines passing through downtown near their midpoints. The system is unique for being powered entirely by wind-generated electricity with zero emissions.
A distinctive feature of the CTrain is that travel between stations along 7th Avenue in downtown is completely free of charge, making this section accessible to all visitors.
To ride the CTrain, you can purchase tickets at station ticket machines (which accept coins, credit, and debit cards) or through the Calgary Transit "My Fare" smartphone app. The same tickets work across the CTrain and bus network.
Bus Network
Calgary Transit operates an extensive bus system covering the entire city. The network includes express bus routes (branded as "MAX") that provide faster service along major corridors, as well as over 160 community bus routes that connect neighbourhoods to CTrain stations and each other.
Bus fares are the same as CTrain fares and can be paid using the same ticket machines, the "My Fare" app, or by exact cash on board. The buses are recognized for their efficiency and environmental responsibility.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Metered taxis are available throughout Calgary and can be hailed from the street or arranged by phone. Uber is the only ride-sharing service authorized to operate at Calgary International Airport, though you should verify your ride has the appropriate TNC sticker on the back window before boarding.
Walkability
Calgary's walkability varies by neighbourhood. Inner-city areas such as the Beltline have seen increased pedestrian activity in recent years due to growing population and density. Cycling is also recognized as a major alternative to driving in the city, with dedicated cycling infrastructure in place.
Getting from the Airport to Downtown
Calgary International Airport is located south of the city. Visitors have several options for reaching downtown:
- Taxi: Metered taxis depart from Arrivals Doors 1, 9, and 15. Fares typically run $40–45 and travel takes about 20 minutes under normal traffic conditions.
- Ride-hailing (Uber): Pre-arranged Uber rides pick up at Arrivals Doors 3, 12, or 15 on the Arrivals level.
- Private shuttles: Scheduled shuttle services operate to downtown hotels for approximately $15 per person. Many airport-area hotels offer free shuttle service for their guests; the airport provides a full list of hotel shuttles available.
- Calgary Transit Bus Route 300 BRT (Airport/City Centre): This is a fast, easy option with luggage racks designed to accommodate air travellers. The fully accessible express bus departs every 30 minutes from 5:30am to midnight daily. Board at Bus Bay 7 (domestic terminal, across from Arrivals Door 2) or Bus Bay 32 (international terminal, across from Arrivals Door 15). Travel time to downtown is 30–40 minutes. Tickets cost $4 for adults and can be purchased at ticket machines accepting coins and cards, from the bus operator with exact cash, or through the "My Fare" app.
- Calgary Transit Bus Route 100 Saddletowne plus CTrain: For budget-conscious travellers, take the Route 100 bus to Saddletowne LRT station, then board a downtown-bound CTrain. This is the slowest option (around 60 minutes total) and has limited luggage space, particularly during rush hours. The bus runs every 30 minutes until 1am on weekdays. Tickets cost $4 for adults.
- Car rental: Car rental agencies operate at the airport for those who prefer to drive.
When planning transit routes using online navigation apps, be cautious: some apps may incorrectly suggest long-distance coach services where Calgary Transit tickets are not valid.
