Start at the Midnapore Station platform, train ticket in hand
It is mid-morning at Heritage Park Historical Village, and the cold is the kind that makes the wooden platform creak underfoot. A restored 1951 diesel-electric locomotive idles at Midnapore Station — the park's first winter train ride, the Heritage Holiday Train — and the smell of coal smoke and hot chocolate drifts across the snow between the ranch buildings. This is the centrepiece of Once Upon a Christmas, Calgary's long-running holiday tradition at 1900 Heritage Dr. S.W.
The event runs across four weekends and a pair of weekdays: Saturday–Sunday Dec. 6–7, Dec. 13–14 and Dec. 20–21, plus Monday–Tuesday Dec. 22–23. Once Upon a Christmas hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Train departures run roughly every twenty minutes from 10 a.m. through 3:20 p.m., with a gap over the lunch hour. Each ride is ten to fifteen minutes — two loops around the park.
- Bundle pricing (plus GST) for non-members: adult (16+) $29.95, child (3–15) $24.95. Admission without the train: adult $19.95, child $14.95.
- Annual members enter Once Upon a Christmas free; the train is a paid add-on, with caboose rides available at a higher tier.
- Arrive at the park an hour before your train time — Midnapore Station is a fifteen-minute walk from the gate. Be at the station ten minutes before departure.
- Dress for an outdoor event: limited heating on the cars, no strollers on board (store them at the station), and rides are cancelled if the temperature reaches –20°C, with no refunds for weather.
Wander the village between rides
Once you step off the train, the Historical Village itself is the attraction. Horse-drawn wagon rides pick up and drop off across from Town Hall. Roving carolers move through the streets. In the Ranch & Farm Life area you can visit the farm animals, and there are photo spots at the Famous Five Centre of Canadian Women and along the Promenade.
The indoor stops matter when your fingers go numb. At the Famous Five Centre you can visit Santa at "The North Pole," with optional professional photos, and children can make Christmas crafts. In Barons Snooker Parlour you'll find the Heritage Park Christmas Lego Village, and a railroad display sits at Innovation Crossing. The Morse Telegraph Club runs Santa Grams at Midnapore Station on Dec. 6, 13, 20 and 22.
Two performances anchor the day. At the Canmore Opera House, "The Twelve Days of Discounts" — a Canmore Christmas production set in a 1910s department-store rivalry — plays daily at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. At Weedon School House, Métis folklore and Christmas storytelling runs throughout the day.
Shop a Christmas market inside a historical village
The Christmas Market Calgary fills the Celebration Tent with local artisan goods and live entertainment, while the Kids' Only Market takes over Burns Barn. At the village Post Office you can buy gifts made in the village itself, alongside a 1910 Parcel Delivery display. It is a market where the shopping and the setting are the same experience — you are buying from stalls set among heritage buildings, not in a convention hall.
Head to Stampede Park for a free weekend of lights and pancakes
Across town, Stampede Christmas takes over the BMO Centre Great Lawn and Outdoor Plaza at Stampede Park for two festive weekends: Dec. 13–14 and Dec. 20–21. Admission is free, and so are the activities and festive treats.
- Saturdays, 4–8 p.m.: light installations, holiday entertainment, hot cocoa by fire pits, festive crafts, and an appearance by mascot Harry the Horse.
- Sundays, 11 a.m.–3 p.m.: free pancake brunch, Stampede Royalty and Harry the Horse, entertainment, hot cocoa, crafts and family activities.
- Throughout: wooden Western gift tag making with Our Little Makery while supplies last, live holiday music, and circus performances from stilt walkers and hula hoopers.
- Getting there: the closest CTrain station is Victoria Park. Parking can be registered through the MyParking App, paid as a guest at vpm.parkplus.ca, or handled at an on-site machine; there is additional value parking at the 11th Ave Lot, accessed off 11th Ave and 5th Street.
The event collects donations on site for Magic of Christmas, a local charity whose 6,000-plus volunteers deliver toys, basic needs and food hampers to more than 650 families and 4,500 people in hospitals, care homes and extended care facilities on Christmas Eve. Online donations are accepted as well.
Know what the season does — and what it doesn't
Both of these are early-to-mid-December programmes: Heritage Park's Once Upon a Christmas closes out on Dec. 23, and Stampede Christmas wraps on Dec. 21. Boxing Day itself, Dec. 26, falls outside the published programming for both, so plan your holiday-week visit around the dates above rather than assuming a Boxing Day event at either site. For the most current details on tickets, member add-ons and weather cancellations, Heritage Park can be reached at 403.268.8500 or info@heritagepark.ca.
Build your Calgary Christmas around a train departure time, then let the rest of the day fill in around it. Book the Heritage Holiday Train before the December weekends sell through, pick your Saturday evening or Sunday brunch at Stampede Park, and pack the boots and mittens — this is a city that celebrates the season outdoors, in the cold, with cocoa in hand.
