Understanding Malir Cantonment

Malir Cantonment is a cantonment town of Karachi, in Sindh, Pakistan, serving as both a military base and a residential establishment. It is the main cantonment for the southern areas of Sindh province and is home to a mix of serving and retired armed services personnel alongside civilian residents, businessmen and bureaucrats. Because it maintains its own infrastructure and sits outside the jurisdiction of the City District Government Karachi, it functions somewhat like a self-contained town within the wider city — which shapes how you move around it and how you connect to the rest of Karachi.

For a visitor, the practical takeaway is that Malir Cantonment is a gated, check-posted area with its own internal bazaar and housing schemes, but it is well connected to Karachi's wider transport network. Most of your journeys will involve leaving the cantonment through one of its gates and picking up a bus, taxi or ride-hailing car on the main roads outside.

How Tourists Get Around Karachi

Karachi does not have a single unified transit system that a visitor can learn once and rely on everywhere. Instead, getting around means combining a few different modes: government-run and private bus services, a bus rapid transit (BRT) network, ride-hailing apps, and traditional taxis. For most short trips within or near Malir Cantonment, ride-hailing and taxis are the simplest option; for longer runs into central Karachi, the bus network is cheap and surprisingly direct.

Because the cantonment is a secure military area, expect to pass through check posts when entering and leaving. Carry identification, and allow a little extra time for these crossings.

Rail, Metro and Tram

The source material for this guide does not describe a metro or tram network serving Malir Cantonment, and no tram system is referenced. What does appear is the conventional railway: several bus routes connect to Drigh Road Station and to Malir Halt, both of which are stops on the city's rail corridor. If you want to use the train, your practical approach is to take a bus or taxi to one of these stations and continue from there. Treat rail as a connection point rather than a primary way of getting around the cantonment itself.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Buses are the backbone of affordable movement in and out of Malir Cantonment. The most useful service for visitors is the Peoples Bus Service, which runs a set of numbered routes touching the cantonment and its gates.

Fares and timings: On the Peoples Bus Service, the fare is PKR 80 for journeys up to 15 km and PKR 120 for longer journeys, per person per ride — this applies across the EV, Pink and Double Decker buses. Buses run from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, with departures roughly every 15 minutes during peak hours (8:00–10:00 AM and 5:00–8:00 PM) and about every 30 minutes off-peak.

Pink Buses (ladies only): These run on routes R1, R2, R3, R9 and R10 during peak hours only, with a similar peak-hour headway. They are a useful option for women travelling alone during busy periods.

BRT Greenline: This is Karachi's bus rapid transit corridor, running between Numaish Chowrangi and Abdullah Chowk in Surjani Town. It operates seven days a week, with services from Numaish in the morning through late evening and the reverse direction starting slightly earlier. An express service runs during peak hours only, calling at a reduced set of stops. The fare is PKR 55, or PKR 15 with a Breeze Card regardless of distance, and real-time updates are available through the Breeze Mobile App. Ladies-only Pink Buses also run on the Greenline seven days a week during the day and evening.

BRT Orangeline: A shorter BRT corridor running from Orangi Town to Jinnah University Board Office Chowk, operating daily from morning to evening. The fare is a flat PKR 25, or PKR 20 with a Breeze Card.

To use the BRT cheaply, get a Breeze Card — it cuts the fare substantially on both the Greenline and Orangeline and gives you access to the Breeze app for live updates.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing services are the most straightforward way to move around Malir Cantonment and to reach the airport or other parts of Karachi. Ride-hailing is available on demand, and taxis can be hired for point-to-point trips. For a short hop such as the run between Malir Cantonment and Karachi Airport, a taxi takes only a few minutes and costs a small amount, with ride-hailing comparable in time and price. If you are carrying luggage or travelling outside bus hours, this is the option to default to.

Walkability

Walking is possible within the cantonment's residential and bazaar areas, but it is not a practical way to cover the distance between the cantonment and the airport or central Karachi — that trip on foot would take well over an hour and a half. Use walking for short errands around the Cantonment Bazar Area and your accommodation, and switch to a vehicle for anything longer.

Getting from the Airport into the City

Karachi's airport sits close to Malir Cantonment, which makes the cantonment one of the more convenient places to stay if you are flying in or out.

Note that the EV-1 bus route also calls at the Airport, giving you a second bus option between the cantonment and the terminal. If you need a place to stay near the airport, the area around it — adjacent to Shah Faisal Town — has a large number of hotels, including the Ramada Plaza by Wyndham Karachi Airport Hotel. Nearby attractions include Karachi Safari Park in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and Kashmir Park.
