Malir Cantonment

Introduction

Malir Cantonment is a cantonment town within Karachi, in Sindh, Pakistan. It functions as a military base and a residential establishment, so expect a quieter, more orderly atmosphere than Karachi's central districts.

Getting around

Malir Cantonment is a gated, check-posted military area with its own internal bazaar and housing schemes, so most of your journeys will begin by leaving through one of its gates and picking up transport on the main roads outside. Expect to pass through check posts when entering and leaving, carry identification, and allow a little extra time for these crossings. Walking works for short errands around the Cantonment Bazar Area and your accommodation, but it is not a practical way to cover the distance to the airport or central Karachi.

Buses are the backbone of affordable movement in and out of the cantonment. The Peoples Bus Service runs numbered routes touching the cantonment and its gates: EV-1 links Malir Cantt to Dolmen Mall Clifton via CMH Malir Cantt, Tank Chowk, Model Colony Mor, Jinnah Avenue, the Airport, Drigh Road Station, PAF Base Faisal, Karsaz, FTC, Korangi Road, DHA Phase 1 and the DHA Clock Tower; EV-2 runs between Bahria Town and Malir Halt via Malir Cantt Gate 5, Gate 6, Tank Chowk, Model Mor and Jinnah Avenue; EV-3 connects Malir Cantt Check Post 5 to Numaish via Safoora Chowrangi, Johar Chowrangi, Johar Mor, Millennium Mall, Bahria University, the National Stadium, Aga Khan Hospital, Liaquat National Hospital and PIB Colony. Longer routes include R9, R12, R1 and a Double Decker service from Malir Halt to Tower. Fares on the Peoples Bus Service are charged by distance band, so keep small change handy. Ladies-only Pink Buses run on some routes during peak hours. For rail, take a bus or taxi to Drigh Road Station or Malir Halt and continue from there; treat rail as a connection point rather than a way of getting around the cantonment itself.

Three days in Malir Cantonment

Day one: Start in the Cantonment Bazar Area, where the everyday rhythm of Malir Cantonment is easiest to read on foot. Expect a mix of shops, stalls and traffic, and use walking to get your bearings before the heat builds. Buses and The Peoples Bus Service connect the area with the rest of Karachi, so you can head out toward landmarks such as Millennium Mall or Dolmen Mall Clifton if you want a change of scene. If you are arriving by air, the Airport and Drigh Road Station are the practical gateways, with PAF Base Faisal and Karsaz along the way.

Day two: Give the day to the cantonment's main arteries and its quieter edges. Tank Chowk, Model Colony Mor, Model Mor and Jinnah Avenue are useful anchors as you move around, and Malir Cantt itself rewards a slow look rather than a rushed checklist. CMH Malir Cantt is a familiar landmark in the area, while Johar Chowrangi, Johar Mor, Safoora Chowrangi and Numaish sit along routes that link Malir Cantonment with the wider city. Keep an eye on how locals use buses and shared transport; it is the most straightforward way to cover ground without a car.

Day three: Use the morning for a last walk through the Cantonment Bazar Area before the day warms up, then branch out toward the city's southern and western edges. Korangi Road, DHA Phase and the DHA Clock Tower give you a sense of Karachi's coastal-facing districts, while Bahria Town and Bahria University show a different face of the metropolis. National Stadium, Aga Khan Hospital and Liaquat National Hospital are recognisable markers if you are navigating by landmark rather than address. FTC and the EV options around the cantonment can help you move between stops, and the Gate and Malir Cantt Check Post are the points to remember when you head back.
