Getting Around Zwolle

Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel and a genuine transport hub for the northern Netherlands, both by road and by rail. For a visitor, though, the most useful thing to know is that the historic centre is compact and partly car-free, which makes it very easy to explore on foot. The city is also well connected to the rest of the country, so day trips and onward travel are straightforward.

On Foot

Walking is the best way to get around central Zwolle. The centre is compact and in part car-free, so you can cover the main sights comfortably without any transport at all. The railway station sits close to the middle of things: it is roughly a ten-minute walk from the station into the centre. If you are basing yourself in the old town, you can treat your own two feet as your primary mode of transport.

By Bike

For the outskirts of town or for exploring the surrounding countryside, renting a bike is a good idea. The Netherlands is famously cycle-friendly, and a bike gives you an easy way to reach areas beyond the walkable core.

Rail Network

Zwolle is a major rail hub, with trains running in many different directions from the station. It is one of the busiest interchange points in the country, second only to Utrecht Centraal in the number of directions served. The timetable is built around coordinated arrivals, so a large number of trains meet at the station at the same times twice an hour, which makes changing trains quick and convenient.

The station is served by fast intercity trains to large destinations and by regional services to smaller towns. All southbound trains from Groningen and Leeuwarden stop in Zwolle, so you can transfer from those lines onto connections in other directions. Notable intercity routes passing through or terminating at Zwolle include:

Regional Sprinter trains connect Zwolle directly with destinations such as Enschede, Almelo, Hengelo, Emmen and Kampen. There are also direct Sprinter services from Amsterdam Centraal via Almere and Lelystad, though that journey is considerably slower than taking the Intercity from Amsterdam Zuid.

There is no metro or tram network in Zwolle; rail and bus are the public transport options here.

Buses

Plenty of bus lines serve the different city districts and the surrounding towns. City buses are operated by Syntus, while regional connections are run by Syntus and OV Regio IJsselmond. Other operators you may encounter in the wider network include Blauwnet, Arriva, NS, Qbuzz and RRReis.

There are two bus terminals at the station, one on the east side and one on the west side. The division can be a little confusing, but as a rule of thumb most city-bound buses leave from the west side, while most regional lines depart from the east side. Check which side you need before you head out.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing services are an option for door-to-door trips, particularly late at night or if you are carrying luggage, but the compact centre and frequent public transport mean you will rarely need them for ordinary sightseeing.

Reaching Zwolle from the Airport

Schiphol is the main international gateway for the region, and it is well connected to Zwolle by rail. The intercity route from Den Haag Centraal runs via Schiphol and Lelystad Centrum through to Zwolle and onward to Groningen or Leeuwarden, and another intercity service links Schiphol with Zwolle on the Vlissingen–Amsterdam–Leeuwarden/Groningen line. In practice this means you can board a train at the airport and ride directly to Zwolle without changing, making the train the simplest way into the city.

By Car

If you are driving, the A28 motorway between Groningen in the north and Utrecht in the centre of the country passes right through Zwolle. The stretch near the city is one of the busiest roads outside the Randstad, and although extra lanes have been added over the years, traffic jams are still not uncommon during rush hour. Direct connections via the A28 include Assen and Groningen to the north, and Harderwijk, Amersfoort and Utrecht to the south-west.

The A50 intersects with the A28 a few kilometres out of town at the Hattemerbroek interchange, giving easy access to Apeldoorn, Arnhem and Eindhoven. From that same interchange, the road continues north-west as the N50 towards Kampen and Emmeloord.
