Getting Around Skudai

Skudai is a town in Johor, Malaysia, sitting just outside the northwestern border of Johor Bahru and separated from the Tampoi ward of the city by the Skudai River. It lies along the Kuala Lumpur–Johor Bahru trunk road (Federal Route 1), which is the main route serving the town, and it is also the southern end of Federal Route 5, which runs down the western coast of Peninsular Malaysia from Ipoh. Although Skudai sits outside Johor Bahru's city limits and falls under the Iskandar Puteri City Council, it is well within the Johor Bahru metropolitan area and part of the Iskandar Malaysia development region — so for practical purposes, getting around Skudai means plugging into the wider Johor Bahru transport network.

Rail

Skudai itself has no railway station. KTM Intercity services do not stop in the town, and the nearest station is Kempas Baru. If you want to arrive or depart by rail, you will need to connect through that station or through Johor Bahru Sentral, which is the main rail gateway for the area and the point where several local bus routes begin.

Buses and Public Transport

Buses are the workhorse of public transport in Skudai, and several routes tie the town to Johor Bahru Sentral railway station:

Skudai is also served by long-distance bus and coach services, which terminate at the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah bus station — useful if you are arriving from further afield rather than from central Johor Bahru.

For tickets, Causeway Link can be reached by phone at +60 7 360 2244 or by email at enquiry@causewaylink.com.my, and its website is causewaylink.com.my. Seats on some services can also be booked online through 12go.asia. Fares on the local routes are inexpensive, so paying in cash on boarding is generally straightforward.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis and ride-hailing apps are a convenient alternative, particularly for short hops between the town's shopping centres and residential areas, or when buses are infrequent. Operators serving the Skudai area include Comfort Taxi, Grab Taxi, Public Cab and Sunlight Taxi. A taxi from Johor Bahru Sentral to Skudai takes roughly a quarter of an hour, so this is a quick option if you are coming in from the city and do not want to wait for a bus.

Driving

If you have your own vehicle or a rental, Federal Route 1 is the backbone road through Skudai, and Federal Route 5 begins (or ends) here. Driving between Johor Bahru Sentral and Skudai takes around the same time as a taxi, with fuel and toll costs amounting to only a couple of ringgit. Note that the town is spread out, so a car makes it much easier to reach the shopping centres — ÆON Mall Taman Universiti, Tasek Sentral, The Store in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama, U Mall in Taman Pulai Utama, and Giant Hypermarket — as well as the universities, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Southern University College.

Walkability

Skudai is a dispersed town rather than a compact walkable core, with its amenities spread across a number of named taman (housing estates) such as Taman Universiti, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah and Taman Sutera Utama. Walking is realistic for short local errands within a single neighbourhood, but for getting between the town's main destinations you should plan on buses, taxis, ride-hailing or a car.

Getting There from the Airport

Senai International Airport is the closest airport to Skudai, located about fourteen kilometres north of the town via Federal Route 1. The practical way into Skudai from the airport is by road — taxi, ride-hailing or a rental car — following Federal Route 1 south. If you prefer public transport, you can travel into Johor Bahru and pick up one of the Skudai-bound services: the Causeway Link T30, T31 or T32 routes, or Muafakat Johor route P-403, all of which connect Johor Bahru Sentral with Skudai. From JB Sentral, the T32 in particular offers a direct run to the OPP Petron TUTA stop in Skudai, departing about once an hour.
