Skudai

Introduction

Skudai is a town in Johor, Malaysia, sitting about 13 km northwest of Johor Bahru's central business district. Its position makes it a practical base for exploring the wider Johor Bahru area while staying outside the city centre.

Getting around

Skudai has no railway station of its own, so rail travel means connecting through Kempas Baru or Johor Bahru Sentral, the area's main rail gateway and the starting point for several local bus routes. Buses are the workhorse of public transport here: Muafakat Johor route P-403 and Causeway Link routes T30, T31 and T32 all link the town to Johor Bahru Sentral. The T32 runs directly from JB Sentral to the OPP Petron TUTA stop roughly hourly every day, a trip of about twenty minutes. Long-distance coaches terminate at the Taman Ungku Tun Aminah bus station, useful if you are arriving from further afield. Local fares are inexpensive and paying in cash on boarding is generally straightforward.

Taxis and ride-hailing are convenient for short hops between shopping centres and residential areas, or when buses are infrequent; operators in the area include Comfort Taxi, Grab Taxi, Public Cab and Sunlight Taxi. A taxi from Johor Bahru Sentral takes roughly a quarter of an hour. With your own vehicle or a rental, Federal Route 1 is the backbone road through town and Federal Route 5 begins or ends here, with fuel and toll costs amounting to only a couple of ringgit. A car makes it much easier to reach the spread-out shopping centres — ÆON Mall Taman Universiti, Tasek Sentral, The Store in Taman Ungku Tun Aminah, Sutera Mall in Taman Sutera Utama, U Mall in Taman Pulai Utama and Giant Hypermarket — as well as Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Southern University College. Skudai is a dispersed town rather than a compact walkable core, with amenities spread across named taman such as Taman Universiti, Taman Ungku Tun Aminah and Taman Sutera Utama; walking works for short errands within one neighbourhood, but plan on buses, taxis, ride-hailing or a car to move between main destinations. From Senai International Airport, about fourteen kilometres north via Federal Route 1, the practical route in is by road — taxi, ride-hailing or rental car — or you can travel into Johor Bahru and pick up the T30, T31, T32 or P-403.

Three days in Skudai

Day one: Base yourself in Skudai and get your bearings in Johor, Malaysia. From Senai International Airport you can reach the town by taxi or bus, and once settled you can explore the neighbourhoods on foot. Taman Ungku Tun Aminah is a good place to start, with its shops and local eateries, and you can continue to Taman Sutera Utama to see Sutera Mall. In the evening, head into Johor Bahru for dinner, using the buses or taxis that link Skudai with the city.

Day two: Give the day to Johor Bahru. Buses such as Muafakat Johor and Causeway Link, along with taxis from Comfort Taxi, Grab Taxi, Public Cab or Sunlight Taxi, make the trip straightforward. Arrive at JB Sentral or Johor Bahru Sentral, both of which connect onward to Kempas Baru, and use the stops around OPP Petron TUTA if you are travelling from the Skudai side. Spend your time around the city centre and the Causeway area, then return to Skudai in the evening.

Day three: Stay closer to Skudai and its neighbours. Visit the campuses of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Southern University College in Taman Universiti, then shop at ON Mall Taman Universiti, Tasek Sentral, The Store, Taman Pulai Utama or Giant Hypermarket. If you have time, follow Federal Route towards Taman Ungku Tun Aminah for a last look at the local streets before you leave.
