Auto Rickshaws and Taxis
Auto rickshaws are the primary hired transport for getting around Nagpur and operate throughout most of the city. They are widely available and a convenient choice for short to medium distances. City Buses
The Nagpur Mahanagar Parivahan Limited (NMPL) operates the city's bus network with a fleet that includes electric buses, minibuses, and larger 50-seat buses. This service covers the metropolitan area and is used by a substantial number of daily passengers, making it a reliable option for getting around the city affordably.
The Metro System
Nagpur Metro began operating in March 2019 and provides modern, rapid transit across the city. The network has 2 lines and 16 stations covering 24.5 km. The metro is a fast and efficient way to cover longer distances within the urban area, complementing the city's other transport options.
Railway Connections
Nagpur Junction is the city's main railway station, centrally located at the foot of Sitabuldi Hill. It is one of India's busiest railway junctions and serves as headquarters for railway operations in the region. The station handles a large volume of daily passengers and connects Nagpur to India's four major metropolitan areas—Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai—as well as many other cities across central and eastern India. Getting from the Airport to the City
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (formerly Sonegaon Airport) is Nagpur's main airport. The metro system provides a connection to the airport, making it straightforward to reach the city center and other parts of Nagpur by rapid transit. Auto rickshaws and taxis are also available at the airport for those preferring direct transport to specific locations.
Intercity Bus Travel
For travel to destinations outside Nagpur, the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) operates intercity and interstate bus services from two main bus stations: Nagpur Bus Sthanak at Ganeshpeth and Mor Bhawan at Jhansi Rani Square, Sitabuldi. Bus service connects Nagpur to major cities throughout Maharashtra and neighboring states, including Bhopal, Indore, Jabalpur, Raipur, Pune, Mumbai, and many others, making it easy to explore the wider region.
Walkability
Nagpur's road network is well-maintained, which supports comfortable walking in many central areas of the city. However, for longer distances or when traveling between different neighborhoods, using auto rickshaws, buses, or the metro is advisable.
