Overview
Nagpur Metro, also known as Majhi Metro, is a rapid transit system serving India's city of Nagpur in Maharashtra. The system consists of two colour-coded lines with 37 stations across a total length of 38.2 kilometres (23.7 miles), and is recognized as one of India's greenest metro rail systems. The metro was inaugurated on 8 March 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi via video conferencing.
To ride the metro as a visitor, you purchase either a single-journey token or a smart card (Maha Card) at ticket counters or vending machines, then tap or insert your ticket at the automatic gates to access the platform. Follow signage to your destination line, board your train, and tap out at your exit station.
The network
Nagpur Metro operates two lines that intersect at a central interchange station:
- Orange Line (also called the North-South Corridor): runs from Automotive Square to MIHAN Metro depot, with 17 stations including the interchange point
- Aqua Line (also called the East-West Corridor): runs from Prajapati Nagar to Lokmanya Nagar, Hingna, with 19 stations including the interchange point
The two lines meet at Sitabuldi (referred to as Munje Square in project documentation), allowing you to transfer between them for onward journeys across the city.
Beyond the metro, Nagpur's public transport includes local buses operated by various services, with frequent connections to local destinations and suburban areas. Auto-rickshaws (three-wheeled taxis) are widely available for short journeys. Ride-hailing apps such as Ola and Uber operate throughout the city. The metro project includes feeder services—shuttle buses, battery-operated vehicles, and planned bicycle-sharing schemes—to provide first and last-mile connectivity to and from metro stations.
Tickets & fares
Nagpur Metro offers two main ticketing options: single-journey tokens and the smart card system called Maha Card.
- Single-journey tokens: Available for individual trips; purchase at ticket counters or vending machines at stations
- Maha Card: A reusable smart card for regular users, offering discounted fares compared to single tokens. You can recharge your Maha Card both online and offline
- Day Pass: Priced at ₹100, offering unlimited metro rides for one day
Special fares are applied on Sundays and national holidays. A fare calculator is available on the official website to help you determine the cost of your journey between specific stations. The exact fare structure varies by distance and zone, and fares are subject to change. Tickets are purchased before boarding; simply insert your token or tap your Maha Card at the automatic entry gates.
From the airport
Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport (NAG) is located 7 kilometres from Nagpur's city centre and is connected to the metro system via the Orange Line (Red Line) at the Airport metro station. You can take the Orange Line from the airport directly into the city centre and to other parts of Nagpur served by the metro network. Alternatively, auto-rickshaws, ride-hailing services (Ola and Uber), and taxis are available at the airport; auto-rickshaws are generally the most economical option if you negotiate the fare beforehand.
Etiquette & customs
When using Nagpur Metro, observe local customs to ensure a respectful and smooth journey:
- Queuing: Form orderly queues at ticket counters and station entrances
- Crowding: Trains can be crowded during peak hours; allow passengers to exit before boarding, and yield space to others
- Priority seating: Seats marked for elderly passengers, people with disabilities, and pregnant women should be vacated if needed
- Eating and drinking: Generally avoid eating and drinking on trains; specific restrictions may apply at certain times
- Noise levels: Keep conversations quiet and avoid loud music or phone calls
- Dress modestly: Local norms favour conservative clothing, particularly for women
