Getting Around Debrecen
Debrecen offers several practical options for visitors to navigate the city. The most accessible and affordable way to move around is by public transport, which covers the entire urban area and connects to nearby towns. Walking is also viable in the city center, and taxis or ride-hailing services are available for more direct journeys.
Public Transport System
Public transport in Debrecen is operated by DKV (Debreceni Közlekedési Vállalat), the city's public transport company. The system comprises trams, trolleybuses, and buses, providing comprehensive coverage across the city.
To use public transport, you'll need to purchase tickets at the station or from ticket machines. A single local ticket costs Ft 440, or Ft 550 if purchased directly on the bus. Note that Budapest tickets are not valid in Debrecen.
Trams
Debrecen is one of only four Hungarian cities that still operates a tram line. The tram system is a convenient way to see much of the city, as it serves many of the most frequently visited locations. The tram route starts at the railway station, runs along the main street, passes the Great Church, and continues to popular destinations including the Old Forest, Zoo, Theme Park, and Public Bath, before connecting to the universities and returning to the starting point. A single tram journey offers a scenic overview of the city's attractions.
Trolleybuses
In addition to trams, DKV operates five trolleybus lines that serve various parts of the city and complement the tram network.
Buses
Buses form the backbone of Debrecen's public transport system, with over 50 routes operated by DKV. All buses are low-floor and air-conditioned, making them accessible and comfortable. Bus lines are particularly useful for reaching nearby places quickly and accessing areas beyond the tram and trolleybus routes.
Walking
Debrecen is a compact city, making it feasible to explore on foot. The city center has many pleasant streets and pedestrian areas. Nagyerdő (the Big Forest) is noted as a particularly beautiful area for walking. However, the quality of streets varies across the city, so it's worth being selective about which neighborhoods you explore on foot.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Three main taxi companies operate in Debrecen: Bolt Taxi, City Taxi Debrecen, and Főnix Taxi. These companies offer mobile apps for convenient booking and payment, allowing you to arrange transport without needing to speak Hungarian or carry large amounts of cash.
Getting from Debrecen Airport to the City
Debrecen Airport is located approximately 5 kilometers southwest of the city center. The most convenient option for visitors is the airport bus service, which connects directly to the city center, train station, and bus station. This is the recommended option for most travelers.
Taxis are also available at the airport. As of 2018, taxi fares to the city center ranged from Ft 3,000 to Ft 4,000.
The airport has limited facilities: there is free WiFi and EuroNet ATMs on-site, though the ATMs offer unfavorable exchange rates. There is no currency exchange office at the airport, so it's advisable to exchange money in the city or withdraw funds from ATMs before traveling if possible.
By Car
While Debrecen is small enough to navigate easily without a car, if you choose to drive, roads in and around the city are adequate. Car rental is available at the airport, though public transport and walking are generally more convenient for city exploration.
