Getting Around Glasgow
Glasgow's city centre is laid out in a grid pattern with streets running north-to-south and east-to-west, making it straightforward to navigate on foot. The most popular way to get around is by car, though visitors have several practical alternatives for moving through the city.
The Glasgow Subway
The Glasgow Subway is an underground light metro line operated by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT). It provides a quick way to move around the city centre and connects key areas including Buchanan Street station (near Queen Street railway station) and St Enoch station (near Glasgow Central railway station).
Buses
Buses are a major transport option in Glasgow. First Glasgow operates frequent services within the city, and various other operators including McGill's and Ember provide routes to and from the airport and surrounding areas. You can pay cash or card on most services, and day tickets or multi-journey passes offer better value if you plan to use buses multiple times.
Walking
The city centre's grid pattern makes it very walkable. Key railway stations are only about a 10-minute walk apart, and many attractions are accessible on foot without needing public transport.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are available throughout Glasgow for shorter journeys. From Glasgow Airport to the city centre, a taxi typically takes around 20 minutes.
Rail Connections Within Scotland
ScotRail operates the local rail network. Two main stations serve the city: Glasgow Central (serving trains from the south, including London and Manchester, as well as regional services) and Glasgow Queen Street (serving fast trains from Edinburgh and routes to northern cities like Aberdeen, Inverness, and Oban). The stations are connected by local buses and are an easy walk apart. Link Bus 389 runs between them free if you hold a through railway ticket.
Getting to Glasgow from the Airport
Glasgow Airport
Glasgow Airport is located west of the city centre near Paisley and is the principal airport for the region. Several transport options connect it to the city:
- Glasgow Airport Express bus takes 15 minutes to Buchanan Bus Station via Queen Street Station, running every 10–15 minutes from 8am to 11pm and hourly overnight. Adult single tickets cost £10 (cheaper if booked online), and single tickets include an onward transfer to other First Glasgow buses in the city centre.
- First Glasgow Bus 77 takes around an hour via Govan, Partick and Kelvingrove to Buchanan Bus Station, running every 30 minutes from early morning to 9pm. It's slower but may be more convenient for reaching the West End, with fares around £5.40.
- McGill's Bus 757 goes to Paisley Gilmour Street railway station in 15 minutes, where you can catch frequent trains to Glasgow Central or other destinations. The bus runs every 30 minutes.
- Ember electric buses offer the E5 and E16 services, which take about 25 minutes to Buchanan Bus Station in the city centre and cost £4.35 for a single. Tickets must be pre-booked online.
- Taxis are available and typically take 20 minutes to reach the city centre, costing around £40.
Glasgow Prestwick Airport
Glasgow Prestwick Airport is located southwest of the city in South Ayrshire and primarily serves budget and leisure airlines. Trains from Prestwick to Glasgow Central are frequent and offer special discounts for air passengers. Bus X77 and motorway routes also connect the airport to the city.
Alternative Airports
Edinburgh Airport, located 35 miles away on the edge of Edinburgh, is easily accessible from Glasgow via direct bus services to Buchanan Bus Station and provides additional flight options to destinations like Istanbul. Manchester Airport, about five hours away by train, offers global connections and frequent rail services to Glasgow Central with one change.
