Getting Around Tampere: A Practical Guide
Tampere offers visitors several convenient ways to move around the city. The public transport system is managed by the Tampere Regional Transport Authority, branded as Nysse. Whether you arrive by plane, train, or car, you'll find options suited to exploring both the compact city centre and the surrounding region.
Public Transport Overview
Public transport in Tampere consists of buses, light rail, and commuter rail services. The system uses fare zones marked with letters A–C, assigned based on distance from downtown Tampere. A single ticket covers travel within a zone, making it straightforward to understand pricing.
Light Rail
Tampere's light rail network opened on 9 August 2021 and has expanded significantly, with a recent extension to Lentävänniemi opening in January 2025. The light rail is a modern, efficient way to travel through the city and connects to other transport modes at major hubs. The network is expanding further, with extensions to Pirkkala and Linnainmaa under construction and expected to open in stages between 2028 and 2032. Many bus routes have been modified to connect to the light rail network rather than running directly to the city centre as the light rail has expanded.
Buses
Buses remain the backbone of public transport in Tampere. The busiest and most important routes are branded as trunk lines (runkolinjat), which may operate at frequent intervals during peak times. Bus routes continue to serve areas not yet reached by light rail and provide connections throughout the city and to surrounding areas.
Commuter Rail
Tampere has commuter rail services operating from Tampere Central Station. These connect to several surrounding towns: southbound services run to Toijala via Lempäälä and Viiala, while northbound services reach Nokia via Tesoma. Some services are branded as the M train, while services continuing towards Helsinki operate as the R train. As of December 2025, planning for reopening stations at Sääksjärvi and Epilä on the current route is underway. The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency and the cities in the Tampere region are also planning to run new commuter rail services towards Orivesi and to Ylöjärvi.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Regular taxis are available throughout Tampere. Shared airport taxis offer a more economical option at approximately €17 per person for specific routes.
Walking and Cycling
The city centre is highly walkable, with most hotels, shops, and attractions either located in the centre or within easy walking distance. The centre is bounded by Lake Näsijärvi to the north, Lake Pyhäjärvi to the south, the main railway station to the east, and Hämeenpuisto Park to the west. The main street, Hämeenkatu, runs through the central square Keskustori and provides a clear orientation point. Notable nearby districts such as Pyynikki and Pispala, located just 2–3 kilometres west of the centre, are accessible for day trips and offer trails for hiking and cycling in all seasons.
Arriving from Tampere-Pirkkala Airport
Tampere-Pirkkala Airport is located approximately 17 kilometres southwest of the city centre. As of February 2026, Air Baltic is the only airline currently operating at the airport.
Several transport options connect the airport to the city:
- Bus: Bus line 34 continues to operate from the airport as of 2026, going to Lielahti through Tesoma. However, this route does not go directly to the city centre, so you will need to transfer to a train at Tesoma or connect to another bus along the route.
- Taxi: Regular taxis cost €40–50 and take approximately 20 minutes to the city centre. Shared airport taxis cost around €17 per person.
Arriving from Helsinki Airport
Helsinki Airport, which has a much wider range of flight options, is approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Tampere by train. Several options are available:
- Train via Tikkurila: Take the P-train, bus, or taxi from Helsinki Airport to Tikkurila station, then board a train to Tampere. Train tickets (including the transfer) can be purchased online, from airport ticket machines, or at a staffed kiosk. Fares range from €17–40 depending on train type, with advance purchases potentially offering discounts.
- Coach: An almost bi-hourly coach service operates from Helsinki Airport to Tampere bus station, operated by Valkeakosken Liikenne, costing €21 and taking approximately 2.5 hours with a coordinated transfer in Vantaa. Finnair also operates two daily direct services taking 2 hours.
- Onnibus alternative: Take the I-train from the airport to Kivistö, walk to Keimolanportti bus stop, and continue to Tampere.
Arriving by Train
Train is the most convenient option for reaching Tampere from elsewhere in Finland. The national railway company VR offers extensive services from across the country. Tampere Central Station is a major rail hub in Finland and is located at the east end of the main street Hämeenkatu, making it very accessible. The station has a staffed ticket office (planned to close in spring 2026), ticket machines, and cafés. Most hotels are within a short walk, and tram stops and bus lines connect directly from the station.
Arriving by Car
Tampere is easily accessible by car from throughout Finland. The city is served by Finnish highways 3, 9, 11, and 12, as well as main road 65, connecting to all major directions. Car rental services are available at Tampere-Pirkkala Airport. Driving from Helsinki takes approximately 2 hours via motorway, with connections also available from Turku, Pori, Rauma, Vaasa, Jyväskylä, and Lahti.
