Getting around Rodenkirchen
Rodenkirchen is a southern borough of Cologne (Köln), and the historic quarter of the same name sits close to the Rhine and forms the centre of the borough. For a visitor, the practical upshot is simple: you are not out in the countryside. You are inside Cologne's transport network, and the city centre is only a short hop away.
How visitors move around
Most visitors to Rodenkirchen get around on foot for local errands and use Cologne's public transport for anything longer. The borough is well connected to the rest of the city by tram, bus and road, and the main options break down as follows.
Rail, metro and tram
Cologne's light rail system, the Stadtbahn, is the backbone of the network, and Rodenkirchen is served by it at the Rodenkirchen stop. Two lines, 16 and 17, connect the borough to the city centres of both Cologne and Bonn, which makes Rodenkirchen unusually convenient if you want to visit either city without changing modes.
For a straightforward trip into Cologne itself, the tram is the cheapest option. A tram runs between Köln Poststr. and Köln Rodenkirchen Bf., taking roughly a quarter of an hour, with departures about every fifteen minutes throughout the day. The fare is modest, in the region of a few euros.
Buses and other public transport
Buses fill in the gaps the tram does not cover. Bus line 106 runs between Köln Severinstr. and Köln Marienburg Südpark, a trip of about fifteen minutes, departing roughly every twenty minutes and operating daily. It is a direct service, so no transfer is needed.
Both the tram and the bus are operated by KVB Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG, the city's main transport company; the bus route is also served by SWB Bus und Bahn. If you need information before you travel, KVB can be reached by phone on 01806 504030, by email at mietservicebus@kvb-koeln.de, or through their website at kvb.koeln.
On tickets and passes: Cologne's public transport uses a common fare system across the Stadtbahn and buses, so a single ticket or a day pass bought for one mode generally covers the other within the same zones. Buy at ticket machines at stops, from the driver where available, or via the operator's app, and validate your ticket before boarding where validation is required.
Taxis and ride-hailing
Taxis are the fastest way to cover the short distance between Cologne and Rodenkirchen, taking only a few minutes, but they are also the most expensive option by a wide margin. Several local operators serve the area, including Großraumtaxi Köln, TAXI 17, TAXI RUF Köln eG and Class Cab CC e.K. Taxis are best reserved for late nights, heavy luggage or trips where the tram and bus timings do not suit.
Walkability
The centre of Rodenkirchen is compact and sits by the Rhine, so walking is a genuinely practical way to explore the quarter itself, its riverside setting and nearby points of interest such as the Cologne Rodenkirchen Bridge, the Maternus-Shrine, Villa Malta, Alt St. Maternus and the Forstbotanischer Garten Köln. The restaurant-ship "Alte Liebe", a landmark known well beyond the town, is another riverside stop best reached on foot.
Bear in mind that the wider borough is large and spread out, covering thirteen city parts including Bayenthal, Godorf, Hahnwald, Immendorf, Marienburg, Meschenich, Raderberg, Raderthal, Rodenkirchen, Sürth, Rondorf, Weiß and Zollstock. Walking between the centre and the outer quarters is not realistic for a visitor; use the tram or bus for those legs. A walk from Cologne proper into Rodenkirchen is possible but long, taking over an hour, so treat it as a hike rather than a commute.
Getting from the airport into the city
Cologne's airport is not in Rodenkirchen, so the practical approach is to head into Cologne first and then continue south to Rodenkirchen. The city's rail and Stadtbahn network is the natural way to do this: from the airport you connect to the Cologne system, then take Stadtbahn lines 16 or 17, which link Rodenkirchen directly with the centres of both Cologne and Bonn. Alternatively, a taxi from Cologne to Rodenkirchen is quick but costly, and the bus and tram options described above will get you the last stretch from the city into the borough.
By road
If you are driving, Gustav-Heinemann-Ufer connects Rodenkirchen with the Cologne Ring, and the Bundesautobahn 555 links the borough with the Cologne Beltway. The Rhine crossings serving the area are the Südbrücke and the A 4 Rodenkirchener Autobahnbrücke.
