Rodenkirchen

Introduction

Rodenkirchen is a southern borough of Cologne, spread across a large area on the left bank of the Rhine. It takes in a long stretch of the city's southern edge, from built-up neighbourhoods close to the centre out to greener, more residential quarters.

The borough is made up of several distinct quarters: Bayenthal, Godorf, Hahnwald, Immendorf, Marienburg, Meschenich, Raderberg, Raderthal, Rodenkirchen, Sürth, Rondorf, Weiß and Zollstock. Each has its own character, so it's worth thinking of the borough as a collection of neighbourhoods rather than a single destination.

Getting around

Rodenkirchen sits inside Cologne's transport network, so you can explore the compact historic centre and its Rhine-side setting on foot and switch to public transport for anything further. The Stadtbahn serves the borough at the Rodenkirchen stop, with lines 16 and 17 linking it directly to the centres of both Cologne and Bonn. For a straightforward trip into Cologne, the tram between Köln Poststr. and Köln Rodenkirchen Bf. takes roughly a quarter of an hour and is the cheapest option. Bus line 106 fills in the gaps, running direct between Köln Severinstr. and Köln Marienburg Südpark. Both tram and bus are operated by KVB Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG, and the bus route is also served by SWB Bus und Bahn.

Cologne's common fare system covers the Stadtbahn and buses, so a single ticket or day pass bought for one mode generally covers the other within the same zones; buy at ticket machines at stops, from the driver where available, or via the operator's app, and validate before boarding where required. Walking is a practical way to see the quarter itself, including the Cologne Rodenkirchen Bridge, the Maternus-Shrine, Villa Malta, Alt St. Maternus, the Forstbotanischer Garten Köln and the riverside restaurant-ship "Alte Liebe". The wider borough, though, spreads across thirteen city parts including Bayenthal, Godorf, Hahnwald, Immendorf, Marienburg, Meschenich, Raderberg, Raderthal, Sürth, Rondorf, Weiß and Zollstock, and walking to the outer quarters is not realistic — use the tram or bus for those legs. A walk from Cologne proper into Rodenkirchen is possible but takes over an hour, so treat it as a hike. Taxis are the fastest way to cover the short distance from Cologne but by far the most expensive; keep them for late nights or heavy luggage. If you are driving, Gustav-Heinemann-Ufer connects the borough with the Cologne Ring, and the Bundesautobahn 555 links it with the Cologne Beltway.

Three days in Rodenkirchen

Day one: Settle into Rodenkirchen and get your bearings along the Rhine, where the waterfront is made for an unhurried walk. Cross the Cologne Rodenkirchen Bridge on foot for views back over the river and the city, then return to the old centre of Rodenkirchen for a look at the Maternus shrine and the lanes of Alt St. In the evening, take the Stadtbahn towards Cologne and explore the left-bank neighbourhoods of Bayenthal, Marienburg and Raderberg, each with its own quiet character.

Day two: Head south along the Rhine to Sürth and Rondorf, where the riverside paths are calm and green. Continue to Weiß and Zollstock for a slower look at the southern edge of Cologne, then loop back through Raderthal. If you want a garden break, the Forstbotanischer Garten Köln is a peaceful place to spend an afternoon. Use the KVB Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe AG and SWB Bus und Bahn services to connect the stops, including Köln Rodenkirchen Bf.

Day three: Take the Stadtbahn into Cologne for a day of city wandering, starting around Köln Severinstr and the Alt St quarter. Cross to the right bank for the Cologne Rodenkirchen Bridge and the Alte Liebe, a riverside spot to pause and watch the water. In the afternoon, visit Villa Malta and the Köln Marienburg Südpark, then use the bus and Stadtbahn to reach Godorf, Immendorf and Meschenich before returning to Rodenkirchen. If time allows, a train from Köln Poststr or Köln Rodenkirchen Bf can carry you onward towards Bonn.
