Getting Around Huanggang

Huanggang is a prefecture-level city in easternmost Hubei Province, sitting on the north bank of the Yangtze River and bordering Henan, Anhui and Jiangxi. The city's administrative area is large and mostly rural, but visitors generally spend their time in the Huangzhou urban district, which is where the main transport connections, stations and hotels are concentrated. Note that the built-up area around Huangzhou blends into neighbouring Ezhou across the river, and many local residents commute to Wuhan for work, so transport here is oriented toward connecting with those bigger neighbours as much as moving around within the city itself.

Rail Connections

Huanggang sits on major north–south railway corridors, including the Jingjiu (Beijing to Hong Kong) and Jingguang (Beijing to Guangzhou) lines. For practical purposes, the main urban area of Huangzhou has several railway stations, and which one you use depends on where you are going and what kind of train you are taking.

Huangzhou Station lies some distance northeast of downtown Huanggang, so allow time for the transfer if you arrive there. Travellers can also use Huangshi station across the river on the Wuhan–Jiujiang Railway as an alternative.

Buses and Public Transport

Local buses are the workhorse of getting around Huangzhou, and the useful thing for a visitor is that the numbered routes radiating from the railway stations all funnel toward the city centre. Bus No. 105, for example, connects Huanggang East station to the centre, and also serves Huanggang station alongside bus nos. 9 and 19, while Huangzhou station is linked by bus No. 101. The routes outside Huanggang West all head downtown. Fares are cheap and paid on board.

For longer journeys within the prefecture, two main bus stations serve Huangzhou:

There is no metro or tram network in Huanggang; the city relies on buses, taxis, cycling and rail for public transport.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are metered and inexpensive by Chinese city standards. The starting fare applies for the first couple of kilometres, then rises in tiers as the distance increases, with a higher rate for the longest stretches. A surcharge applies to the starting fare late at night. In practice this means short hops around Huangzhou are very affordable, and even longer cross-town trips stay reasonable.

Ride-hailing apps work in the city as they do elsewhere in China, and are a convenient option if you don't speak Chinese or don't want to explain a destination to a driver.

Walking and Cycling

Central Huangzhou is compact enough that walking between nearby sights, hotels and restaurants is realistic, though the city is spread out enough that you will want wheels for anything beyond the immediate centre. Shared bicycles are available around the city: you unlock one by scanning a QR code and are charged according to how far and how long you ride. This is a popular and low-cost way for locals to cover medium distances, and it works well for visitors too.

Getting There from the Airport

Huanggang has no commercial airport of its own. The nearest is Wuhan Tianhe International Airport in Wuhan, to the west. There are direct buses from the airport to some of Huanggang's outer areas, including Hong'an County, Luotian County, Macheng City, Qichun County and Yingshan County.

If you are heading to Huanggang's main urban area, however, there is no direct airport bus, and you will need to change buses or trains somewhere along the way. A straightforward option is to take a bus from the airport to Fujiapo Bus Station in Wuhan's Wuchang District, and then catch a bus onward to Huanggang from there. Alternatively, make your way to Wuhan Railway Station and take the intercity train to Huanggang West Station, from which local buses run into the city centre.

Crossing the River

Two bridges link Huanggang with Ezhou on the south bank of the Yangtze: the Ehuang Bridge, which carries the China National Highway 106 between the main urban area and Ezhou, and the Edong Bridge, which carries two major expressways. Other crossings in the wider area include the Jiujiang Yangtze River Bridge, a combined road-and-rail bridge between Huangmei County and Jiujiang, and the Huangshi Bridge, which links Xishui County to Huangshi. These matter mainly if your itinerary extends beyond Huangzhou into the surrounding counties.
