Orientation

Shaoshan is a county-level city in Hunan province, administered by the prefecture-level city of Xiangtan, with Qingxi Town as its seat. It sits in the mid-eastern part of Hunan and the mid-north of Xiangtan, bordered by Ningxiang to the north, Xiangxiang to the west and southwest, and Xiangtan County to the east and southeast. It is the smallest administrative unit in Hunan by both size and population, and its terrain is dominated by Mount Shaofeng and the Shao and Shishi rivers, with hills in the west giving way to a mix of hills and plains in the east.

For visitors, the practical consequence of this small scale is that Shaoshan is a compact, easy place to get around. As the birthplace of Mao Zedong, it draws heavy red tourism, and the main sites are clustered closely enough that moving between them is simple even with limited Chinese.

Arriving by Train

Shaoshan South Railway Station has transformed access to the city. High-speed trains run from Changsha roughly hourly, starting in the morning and continuing until early evening, and the trip takes only about twenty-five minutes. On this short run the trains can reach very high speeds. The station is a short drive from the Visitor's Center, which makes a day trip from Changsha entirely practical.

At the station parking lot you will find buses waiting, including large tourist buses and local buses. The local bus to the Visitor's Center is free, but if you do not speak Chinese the tourist bus is the easier option: listen for someone calling out "Mao Zedong." The tourist bus is aimed at day trippers who have not arranged a group tour, and you are welcome to join the (Chinese-language) tour if you like. Even without the tour, a few yuan will get you to the Visitor's Center.

Arriving by Bus or Car

Shaoshan's highway connections reach out in all directions: eastward to Xiangtan City, and northward to Changsha and Zhangjiajie. Buses run to Xiangtan frequently, roughly every fifteen minutes starting early in the morning. Buses to Changsha depart about every half hour from 7AM to 5:30PM. From Changsha, air-conditioned buses to Shaoshan leave Changsha Southern Station about every fifty minutes between 7AM and 5PM. By car, Shaoshan lies about an hour's drive from Changsha.

Getting Around the Sites

Getting around the main tourist sites is extremely easy, even with limited Chinese. From the train station, buses take you to the Visitor's Center. At the Visitor's Center, turn left to the ticket area, where you will almost certainly find someone who speaks English; they can give you a map and sell you tickets. Tickets cost around ¥20 for the Mao Memorial Park and around ¥80 for Mao's village.

Free buses link the Visitor's Center, the Mao Memorial Park, and Mao Square. When you want to leave, simply point at your ticket, which carries a photo of the Visitor's Center. Buses from the Visitor's Center back to the train station run regularly, and taxis wait at the Visitor's Center for people heading to the station.

At the museums you need to find a ticket booth; admission tickets are free, but staff will want to see your passport. The crowds of Chinese tourists can be a little intimidating, but the whole circuit is entirely doable on your own, and with basic Chinese skills it is positively easy. This is a very well-trodden tourist destination.
