Getting Around Tangshan

Tangshan, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Navigating Tangshan as a visitor involves a variety of transportation options, ranging from regional rail and bus networks to local transit and taxis. Because the city is a major industrial hub and a key corridor in Northeast China, its infrastructure is designed to move large numbers of people across both local districts and neighboring regions.

Getting to the City

Visitors arriving by air can use Tangshan Sannühe Airport, located approximately 20 km northeast of the city center. The airport serves as a joint military-civilian facility with domestic flights to several major Chinese cities.

To reach the city from the airport, there are three dedicated shuttle bus routes. These buses provide direct connections to key locations such as the Tangshan Hotel and the Hengmao International Metropolis area. Note that these routes operate on different schedules; for example, some only run on specific days of the week (Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Sundays), so checking the current schedule is recommended before heading to the airport.

Alternatively, Tangshan is accessible by rail. The Tangshan Railway Station serves as a major transport hub that integrates rail, bus, and taxi services. High-speed rail connects the city to Beijing in roughly 60 to 100 minutes, while regular-speed rail services also connect to nearby hubs like Tangshan North Railway Station.

Local Transit: Bus and Rail

While Tangshan is noted for being a large city without a subway system, it maintains an extensive bus network. There are specific "tourist routes" designed to help visitors reach major landmarks such as the Earthquake Memorial Monument Square, various parks (including South Lake Park and Fenghuangshan Park), and cultural sites like the Peiren Historical and Cultural Street.

These tourist routes offer flat-rate fares:

Standard city bus lines also operate from the main railway station, connecting it to other parts of the city like Qixin Interchange and Yanhelou. These standard routes typically have a low flat fare (approximately ¥1 or ¥2 depending on air-conditioning).

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a convenient way to navigate the city, especially for direct point-to-point travel. The Tangshan Railway Station features a dedicated taxi waiting area located in the basement level via a sunken plaza, allowing passengers to queue easily upon arrival by train.

The standard taxi fare structure begins at ¥10 for the first 2 km, with an additional charge of ¥2.5 per kilometer and a small waiting fee every five minutes.

Walkability

While specific walking routes are not detailed in the transport guides, the city's layout includes several historical and cultural streets, such as the Peiren Historical and Cultural Street, which are often accessible via local bus lines. The central area around the Earthquake Memorial Park serves as a primary focal point for visitors.
