Getting from the Airport
Depending on your final destination within the province, there are two primary airports serving the region: Changchun Longjia International Airport and Yanji Airport. For those landing at Changchun Longjia International Airport, the city of Changchun is located approximately 31 km away, while Jilin City is roughly 71 km from the airport.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
Taxis are considered one of the most effective ways to navigate the area. They are generally inexpensive; however, it is highly recommended that travelers carry a written note of their destination in Mandarin characters if they do not speak the language. This ensures clear communication with the driver. While taxi companies are generally reliable and do not attempt to cheat passengers, it is important to ensure the driver follows the meter's indicated price. In some instances, drivers may pick up additional passengers if there are empty seats available.
Public Transit: Rail and Bus
The region offers various forms of public transportation, though ease of use varies by mode:
- Light Rail: In Changchun, the light rail system provides a convenient way to travel between major points. For example, Line 3 connects the train station area to the Changying Movie Wonderland, passing through local universities. Tickets are purchased at stations and are priced based on the distance traveled. Free transfers are available between specific lines at designated stations.
- Buses: The bus network is both affordable and extensive. In many urban areas, a flat fee of 1 yuan applies regardless of the distance traveled. However, because signage is primarily in Chinese, navigating this system can be very difficult for those who cannot read the language.
- Minibuses: These are common in cities like Changchun and Yanji. They are useful for reaching suburban areas that may not be serviced by standard buses, with fares typically ranging between 1 and 2 yuan.
Walking and Cycling
The suitability of walking depends heavily on the season. From April to October, the weather is pleasant enough for walking as a primary mode of transport. However, during the winter months, temperatures become too extreme for walking long distances, and other forms of transportation should be used instead.
Cycling is generally not recommended for tourists. During the winter, it is too cold, and during the summer, traffic conditions make it dangerous. Many cities in the region do not have separated cycle lanes, meaning cyclists must share the road with buses, taxis, cars, and motorcycles. If you choose to cycle, it is advised to follow local residents on bikes during off-peak hours.
Motorcycles
Motorcycles are widely used throughout various cities for quick travel. While they often travel at lower speeds in cycle lanes, they are not legally permitted to carry fare-paying passengers. Travelers should be aware that using them as a form of public transport could lead to complications in the event of an accident.
