Getting Around Changchun

Changchun, China

By the Travel Wiki editorial team

Changchun is a compact city featuring a layout of wide avenues and public squares, making it relatively easy to navigate. However, due to an increase in private vehicle ownership, traffic congestion can be an issue for travelers.

Getting from the Airport

The Longjia International Airport is located approximately 30 km east of the city center. There are three primary ways to reach the city from the airport:

Rail and Metro Networks

The city is served by a multi-line metro and light rail system (Lines 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8). These lines provide convenient access to various parts of the city and connect to major transit hubs:

The T-Union Card is a valid payment method for the metro system and can be used regardless of where it was issued.

Buses and Trams

While an extensive bus network exists, many routes are crowded and may be difficult to navigate without the ability to read Chinese. Most local buses cost ¥2. Key routes include:

The city maintains two remaining tram routes (54 and 55) in the western part of the city. Route 55 ends at Changchun West, while Route 54 ends at Hoqi Street. The fare for these trams is ¥2 per ride.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are considered one of the most convenient ways to get around the city. They are generally affordable, with fares starting at ¥5 for the first 2.5 km (plus a mandatory ¥1 fuel surtax). While drivers are not known to cheat, it is highly recommended that visitors have their destination written in Chinese or have a physical piece of paper with the address to ensure they reach the correct location.

Walkability

Between May and mid-November, Changchun is a pleasant city for walking as the terrain is flat and the weather is favorable. However, because the city is spread out, visitors should plan to use other forms of transportation for longer distances. During the winter months, temperatures are too extreme for long walks, and other transport methods should be prioritized.
