Getting Around Dongyang

Dongyang is a county-level city in Central Zhejiang Province, administered under Jinhua, and it sits close to the neighbouring city of Yiwu. For a visitor, the practical geography is simple: the built-up area of Dongyang and Yiwu run together, so trips between the two are short and easy, and the surrounding towns — including Hengdian, home of the famous film studio — are reachable as day trips.

Rail, Metro and Trams

The key piece of public transport infrastructure for visitors is the Jinyidong line, a metro line that links Yiwu, downtown Jinhua and Dongyang. Crucially for sightseeing, it also serves Hengdian World Studios, which means you can reach the movie set by metro rather than relying on a car or taxi.

Dongyang also has a conventional rail connection. The city is roughly an hour and a half from Shanghai by train, making rail a realistic way to arrive from outside the region. If you are coming from further afield, the metro and mainline rail networks together cover the main arrival points and the most popular visitor destination in the area.

Buses and Other Public Transport

Long-distance buses are an alternative to the train for reaching the area. From Shanghai, a long-distance bus to Dongyang takes around four hours — slower than the train, but a useful option if rail times do not suit you. Within the city, local bus services operate as the everyday public transport for residents and visitors moving between the subdistricts and outlying towns.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are a practical way to cover short regional hops. Yiwu is about a 25-minute taxi ride from Dongyang, and Hangzhou is roughly a two-hour taxi journey away. For a visitor based in Dongyang, taxis and ride-hailing are the most flexible way to reach specific addresses, the towns, or attractions that are not directly on the metro line.

Walking

Downtown Dongyang is walkable for the central sights. Lu Residential Complex, the great Ming- and Qing-dynasty architectural complex known as the "Imperial Palace in South China," is located right in the downtown area, so it can be visited on foot as part of a walk around the city centre. Baiyun Cultural Park, a relaxation spot with Daoist and Buddhist representations, is another city attraction suited to a leisurely walk. For anything beyond the central districts — the outer towns, Dongbai Mountain, or Hengdian — plan on using the metro, a bus or a taxi instead.

Getting from the Airport into the City

The source material does not describe a Dongyang airport or an airport transfer. In practice, visitors flying in use the nearest major airport serving the region and then continue by train, long-distance bus, or taxi. Because Dongyang is about an hour and a half from Shanghai by train and about four hours from Shanghai by long-distance bus, and about two hours from Hangzhou by taxi, the most reliable approach is to land at a regional gateway and connect onward by rail or road. Confirm current schedules and connections locally before you travel, as services change.
