Dongyang

Introduction

Dongyang is a county-level city in Central Zhejiang Province, under the jurisdiction of Jinhua, and forms part of the Yangtze River Delta Economic Region. The city covers a substantial area and administers eleven towns, one township, and six subdistricts, so its territory stretches well beyond a single urban core.

For the traveller, that structure is the key to reading the place: the city proper and its subdistricts sit within a wider landscape of towns and countryside, all within Jinhua's orbit in central Zhejiang.

Before you go

Dongyang sits in central Zhejiang, roughly a couple of hours by car from Hangzhou, and its history stretches back more than 1,800 years — ancient poems praised it as a place of fine landscape. Plan your trip around two distinct areas: Dongyang city itself, home to Luzhai Residence, the China Woodcarving Museum, Dongyang Woodcarving Town and nearby ancient villages; and Hengdian town, where you'll find Hengdian World Studios, its film and TV theme parks and Wan Sheng Street. The local culture is closely tied to woodcarving, tea and small-town market life, and the city is also known for Dongyang bamboo weaving and traditional building crafts.

The climate is humid subtropical: summers are hot and humid, winters are cold and damp, and typhoons are possible in late summer and early autumn. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are the best seasons to visit, so time your trip accordingly and pack for the season you choose.

Getting there

Dongyang has no airport of its own, so you'll arrive via one of the nearby cities. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport is the closest major international gateway, roughly two hours away by car whether you're heading to Dongyang or Hengdian. Yiwu Airport is closer still; a taxi from there reaches Dongyang city or Hengdian in about half an hour to forty minutes.

By rail, Hengdian Station sits on the Hangzhou–Wenzhou high-speed line, with journeys from Hangzhou West taking around forty minutes to an hour. Yiwu Station, a major hub on the Shanghai–Kunming line, is about thirty to forty minutes from Hangzhou; from there, continue to Dongyang or Hengdian by bus or taxi, a trip of roughly forty minutes. If you're driving yourself, the route from Hangzhou via the G60 and connecting expressways usually takes between one and a half and two hours, while Yiwu to Dongyang is about thirty minutes by car — though traffic around Hengdian can be heavy on weekends and public holidays. Dongyang Passenger Transport Center runs frequent buses to Hengdian and connects onward to Yiwu, Jinhua, and Hangzhou.

Getting around

Dongyang's built-up area runs together with neighbouring Yiwu, so short hops between the two are easy by taxi or ride-hailing app. Taxis are cheap for trips inside the city, and a ride from Dongyang to Hengdian takes about half an hour. For anything beyond the centre — the outlying towns, Dongbai Mountain or Hengdian — plan on a taxi, a bus or the metro rather than walking.

The Jinyidong metro line is the key piece of public transport for visitors: it links Yiwu, downtown Jinhua and Dongyang, and also serves Hengdian World Studios, so you can reach the film set by metro instead of relying on a car. Local buses are the everyday option for moving between the subdistricts and outlying towns, and in Hengdian free shuttle buses connect the main scenic areas, with tourist buses and taxis also available. Downtown Dongyang itself is walkable for the central sights, including Lu Residential Complex and Baiyun Cultural Park, but wear comfortable shoes — a full day at Hengdian can involve a lot of walking.

Where to stay

Most travellers base themselves either in Dongyang city or in Hengdian town, and the choice shapes your trip. In Dongyang city, chain hotels are usually good value and come with free parking, making them a practical base if you have a car. In Hengdian town, guesthouses and budget hotels cluster near Wan Sheng Street, while mid-range and high-end hotels often offer ticket packages that bundle your room with admission to the studios.

Food & drink

Dongyang food is simple, filling and often inexpensive, making it easy to eat well without spending much. Local specialties worth seeking out include Dongyang womian, a thick, rich noodle soup with vegetables and meat; Shanglu wonton, small wontons in a light broth; and Qianxiang mutton, often served in winter. Also look for Dongyang chicken pot, a hearty chicken stew, Nanma meat pie, a savory stuffed flatbread, and hutata, a thick, comforting local snack. For a street snack, braised duck head is popular.

To try several local dishes in one evening, head to Wan Sheng Pedestrian Street in Hengdian Town, a busy street with many small restaurants and snack stalls that stays lively from late morning to late night. For the signature noodle soup, the well-known local shop Laotaipo Womian serves Dongyang womian at lunch and dinner. Dongyang is not a major nightlife destination, but Hengdian has bars and tea shops around Wan Sheng Street. Local tea, especially Dongbai cloud tea, is worth trying, and you will find many cafes and milk tea shops in Dongyang city center and near the scenic areas.

What to see and do

Dongyang rewards travellers who come for its woodcarving heritage. Start at the China Woodcarving Museum, which covers the history of the craft, carved decoration in social life, and woodcarving traditions from around the world; it's a useful introduction before you visit Luzhai Residence, a national key cultural relic celebrated as the pinnacle of Dongyang woodcarving art. The Dongyang Museum adds local history and dinosaur fossils to the picture. For a hands-on angle, some workshops in Dongyang and Hengdian offer simple woodcarving or bamboo-weaving experiences by reservation, and you can ask at the museum or local craft shops about current options. Dongyang Woodcarving Town, a small cultural tourism town in Liushi Subdistrict with exhibition halls, workshops and craft shops, suits a half-day if the craft interests you.

Hengdian World Studios, a major film and television shooting base, is the area's other draw, with parks including Qinwang Palace, Along the River During Qingming Festival, Ming-Qing Palace, Guangzhou–Hong Kong Street and Dream Valley, linked by free shuttle buses. In the evening, Wan Sheng Street is lively with snack stalls, shops and street performances, a good place to see everyday Hengdian after the parks close. Outside town, Li Zhai and Cai Zhai are traditional villages with preserved Ming and Qing buildings, often visited together with Luzhai by car and good for photography and for seeing rural Zhejiang life. Dongbai Mountain is popular for hiking, cycling and driving, with winding roads that demand careful driving; the top can be much cooler than the city even in summer, and it is best at sunrise or sunset.

When to go

Dongyang has a humid subtropical climate, so plan your trip around the milder seasons. Spring and autumn are the best times to visit, offering conditions more comfortable than the extremes of summer and winter. Spring is a good window for sightseeing before the heat of summer sets in.

Summers are hot and humid, making this the least comfortable stretch for walking and outdoor sightseeing, and late summer also carries the possibility of typhoons. Autumn brings a break from the summer heat and humidity, though early autumn can still bring typhoons, so the later part of the season is the safer bet. Winters are cold and damp, with raw, chilly conditions, and are not among the recommended seasons for a visit.

Three days in Dongyang

Day one begins in downtown Dongyang, where the Lu Residential Complex and Luzhai Residence give you a sense of the city's traditional domestic architecture. Continue to the China Woodcarving Museum to understand the craft that defines the area, then spend the afternoon in Dongyang Woodcarving Town, where workshops and studios show the trade in practice. In the evening, take a stroll along Wan Sheng Street for a feel of the city's everyday rhythm.

Day two, head to Hengdian and Hengdian World Studios, the film and television production base that has made the town known across the country. Allow a full day to move between its sets and streets, and keep in mind that spring and autumn months such as March, May, September and November are the most comfortable times to be outdoors here.

Day three, use downtown Dongyang as your base for the morning before setting out for Dongbai Mountain, the area's principal natural escape. If you are continuing onward, Hengdian Station and Yiwu Station connect the region by rail, while Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport and Yiwu Airport serve longer journeys. The Jinyidong line and buses from Dongyang Passenger Transport Center link the main towns, and taxis are useful for the final stretches.
