An Overview of Getting Around Gloucester

Gloucester is a cathedral city and the county town of Gloucestershire, in the South West of England, sitting on the River Severn between the Cotswolds to the east and the Forest of Dean to the west. It is a compact, historic city, and much of what a visitor wants to see lies within a walkable core. For longer hops, or for reaching the surrounding area, the city is served by rail, buses, taxis and ride-hailing.

Rail

Gloucester is connected to the national rail network and is a practical base for exploring the wider region. The city sits a short distance from Cheltenham, and the surrounding towns and cities — including Bristol and the wider South West — are reachable by train. If you are arriving by rail, the station is your gateway into the city, and onward travel by bus, taxi or on foot is straightforward.

For ticketing, buy your ticket before you travel, either at the station or through the relevant train operator's app or website. Advance tickets are usually cheaper than buying on the day, and off-peak fares are more flexible. If you plan several journeys, ask about a day return or a rover-style ticket, which can work out better value than separate singles.

Buses and Local Public Transport

Buses are the main way to move around Gloucester and to link the city with nearby towns and villages. Services radiate from the city centre, so the simplest approach is to head for the central stops and pick the route that matches your destination. Local routes also connect residential areas, shopping districts and the hospital, which is useful if you are staying outside the very centre.

On the bus, you generally pay the driver on boarding, either in cash or by contactless card, and you can also buy tickets through the operator's app. If you are making more than a couple of journeys in a day, a day ticket is usually better value than paying for each trip separately. Weekly and longer passes are worth asking about if you are staying a while. Keep in mind that services are typically reduced on Sundays and public holidays, so check times in advance.

Taxis and Ride-Hailing

Taxis are widely available in Gloucester, with ranks in the city centre and near the railway station, and they can also be booked by phone. Ride-hailing apps operate in the city too, which is convenient if you prefer to arrange and pay for a journey through your phone. Taxis and ride-hailing are the most practical option for late nights, for carrying luggage, or for destinations that are not well served by bus. Fares are metered in taxis, while ride-hailing prices are set by the app and can rise at busy times.

Walking

Gloucester is a good city for walking. The historic core is compact, and many of the main sights are close together. Gloucester Cathedral — the burial place of King Edward II and Walter de Lacy, and a location used in the Harry Potter films — anchors the centre, and other points of interest such as the museum and school of art and science, the former county gaol, the Shire Hall and the Whitefield memorial church are within reach on foot. The city's Roman origins are still legible in the street plan: Northgate, Southgate, Eastgate and Westgate Streets follow the lines of their original Roman counterparts, and remains of the Roman and mediaeval East Gate can be seen in the East Gate Chamber on Eastgate Street.

Walking is also the easiest way to appreciate the city's layout, which grew up around the River Severn and the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Comfortable shoes are a good idea, as some streets and paths are uneven, and the weather in this part of England can change quickly.

Getting In from the Airport

If you are flying in, the most convenient major airport for Gloucester is Bristol Airport, which serves the South West. From the airport, the usual options are a direct coach or bus service into the city, a taxi or pre-booked transfer, or a combination of airport shuttle and train. Coach and bus services are the cheapest option, while taxis and private transfers are the most direct and are worth considering if you have luggage or are arriving late. Whichever you choose, book or check times in advance, as airport services are less frequent in the evening and on Sundays.
