Getting from the Airport to the City
Belo Horizonte is served by two airports: Confins (Aeroporto Internacional Tancredo Neves) and Pampulha (Aeroporto Carlos Drummond de Andrade). Confins is located approximately 40 km from the city center and offers domestic flights throughout Brazil as well as international connections. Pampulha is located much closer to the downtown area, about 9 km away, and primarily handles domestic flights within the state of Minas Gerais.
To reach the city center from Confins Airport, you have several transportation options:
- Ride-hailing: Services like Uber are available and can transport you to the city center.
- Taxis: Standard white taxis use taximeters for city travel. For trips to the countryside or other states, fares may be negotiated in advance. There is also a "special" taxi service (dark blue cars) that offers pre-negotiated rates for airport transfers.
- Buses: There are both "conventional" and "executive" bus services available from Conf1ns. Some of these routes specifically serve the city's main bus station and the Pampulha area.
- Car Rental: Major rental agencies have booths at both airports if you prefer to drive yourself.
Public Transportation: Buses and Trains
The city is well-served by a complex bus network. To navigate the system, it is helpful to understand the color-coding of the fleet:
- Blue buses: These travel between different regions of the city via the downtown area.
- Yellow buses: Known as "circular" (SC) buses, these stay within a single region and follow a loop.
- Green buses: These connect various BHBUS stations to each other or to the downtown area.
- Orange buses: These travel between regions without passing through the city center.
- Grey buses: These are premium executive services that offer amenities like air conditioning and Wi-Fi for specific routes.
- Lemonish-and-gray buses: These are part of the municipal BRT service, providing a more comfortable, air-conditioned ride between specific stations and regions.
Passengers can pay the bus fare using cash or an electronic "Cartão BHBUS" card. Tourists are generally advised to use cash, as rechargeable cards can be purchased from drivers or at designated stations.
The city also features a Metrô (subway) system that runs along the northern side of downtown. While it connects major areas like Eldorado and Vilarinho, it does not cover the majority of the city's neighborhoods. Additionally, there is a specialized long-distance train service located in the city center at 5 Estação Central for travel to other regions.
Taxis and Ride-Hailing
For more direct point-to-point travel, both taxis and ride-hailing services are widely available. Taxis are generally considered safe within the city; most are white, while "special" cabs are black. Ride-hailing platforms like Uber and Cabify provide extensive coverage throughout Belo Horizonte and into neighboring cities.
Walking and Navigation
Walking is a viable way to explore the city center, but it requires some preparation. The urban layout features a mix of standard grid streets and diagonal roads, which can make navigation confusing without a map. Furthermore, because the city is built on hilly terrain, comfortable walking shoes are recommended for navigating the various inclines.
For safety, it is advised to stay on main avenues and streets when walking at night. Due to the complexity of the bus system and the potential for heavy traffic during rush hours, travelers are encouraged to plan their specific routes in advance before heading out.
