Start at Praça da Liberdade as the Afternoon Tips Toward Evening
By late afternoon on December 31, the Alameda da Travessia is already filling. The stage sits at the end of the avenue, facing the Palácio da Liberdade, and the crowd it draws — roughly 30,000 people across the night — arrives early to claim a spot on the pavement. This is Virada Liberdade, the city's free official celebration, running from 18:00 to 01:30. You can expect a drone show making its debut, an expanded videomapping projection across the palace facade, and a tribute to the singer-composer Lô Borges woven into the programme. The infrastructure is serious: 800 staff on site, more than 300 portable toilets along Rua da Bahia, and 12 fixed facilities at Vila Mineiridade. Arrive with time to walk the perimeter before the music starts; the light on the palace as the videomapping begins is the moment the evening announces itself.
Two Free Stages, Two Different Nights
Belo Horizonte runs two major free public celebrations, and they pull in different crowds. Choose your centre of gravity and commit to it, because crossing town mid-night is impractical.
- Virada Liberdade — Praça da Liberdade. 18:00 to 01:30. The headline free event: drone show, videomapping, tribute to Lô Borges. Stage at the end of Alameda da Travessia, in front of the Palácio da Liberdade. Expect 30,000 people.
- Virada Eletrônica — Praça da Estação. Six hours of free cultural programming behind the Museu de Artes e Ofícios, with an emphasis on Minas Gerais culture and gastronomy. The stated aim is to draw a diverse audience into the city centre. If you want food, music and a less compressed crowd, this is your night.
Where to Eat and Drink as the Clock Runs Down
If you'd rather have a table, a menu and a bar than a spot in a crowd, the city's restaurants, clubs and hotels run ticketed parties across the capital and the metropolitan region. Most begin between 19:00 and 22:00, and several advertise views of the city's or the lagoon's fireworks. Formats range from all-inclusive open bar and food to à la carte, so read the listing before you buy.
- Praia Buritis — 21:00, Rua Moisés Kalil 209, Buritis. Beach-themed and covered, with panoramic views of the city fireworks. Acts include Felipe Hott, Yuri Vieira, Davi Ferraz and DJ Lucas Motta. Sectors run from pista through tables for 8, 6 or 4, bistro tables for 2–3, and a premium camarote. The VIP offering includes Japanese food and paella mineira, and breakfast is included.
- Réveillon da Orla — 22:00, Av. Otacílio Negrão de Lima 2640, on the Lagoa da Pampulha waterfront. Family-oriented, with a monitored kids' space. Sem Limite (pagode) and Léo Max (sertanejo) perform, alongside Gutemberg Átila, Mattheus Amaral and DJ Nigo.
- Mercado de Origem — Do Nosso Jeito — 21:00, Rua Adriano Chaves e Matos 447, Belvedere. A first edition with a decorated rooftop, premium open bar and food, and a buffet by chef Cristina Misk with pasta prepared live. Rick & Nogueira and banda Marejha play; 12-year whisky is poured.
- Réveillon Porcão — 22:00, Espaço Meet, Av. Raja Gabáglia 2671, São Bento. A long-established BH churrascaria event with two spaces. Espaço Meet serves finger foods, a full dinner and a burger bar with Banda C4sh, Breno & Vitor and DJ Julio Guedes; Espaço Premium offers a full rodízio with duo Ronaldo e Rafael and premium pours including Johnnie Walker Black Label and Tanqueray.
- Estância Pampulha — 22:00, Rua Professor José Vieira de Mendonça 1485, Engenho Nogueira. A rustic restaurant's first réveillon, with pagode and sertanejo, open bar and food, costelão fogo de chão and porco no rolete, plus a small farm and balloon workshop for children. Tickets from R$150.
- Porks Castelo — 19:00 to 02:00, Rua Castelo de Alenquer 50, Bairro Castelo. Music-focused, with Verace craft beer on an open chope bar and drinks; food is charged separately from the house pork menu. Ludy Duo and Banda Rock Reunion play rock. Pet friendly, with lower-priced tickets from R$180.
- Réveillon Privilège — 20:00, Clube Labareda, Avenida Portugal 4020, Bairro Itapoã, Pampulha. A rock-themed debut with tribute acts to Queen (Lurex) and U2 (U2 Go Home), plus Sinal Vermelho. Pet friendly, with a kids' area and lagoon views.
- Réveillon Na Areia 360 — 22:00, Arena BH Beach, Rua Mário Coutinho 171, Estoril. A fifth edition, literal feet-in-the-sand tropical format with waiter service and a pasta buffet. Luccas Santos and Humberto perform; open bar Heineken.
- Nenety Réveillon Sorrisos — Caza Raro — 22:00, Avenida Nossa Senhora da Candelária 5100, Nova Lima. Open wine, Red Bull and Aperol drinks, a fine savoury menu and a pasta dinner, with Harley Queen, Índio and DJ Bruno Dias.
- Ouro Minas Dolce By Wyndham — Av. Cristiano Machado 4001, Bairro Ipiranga. The hotel typically runs at full occupancy for New Year's, with a special ceia and DJ, plus breakfast, pool and massages for guests. Packages cover standard apartments for up to two adults with ceia across one to three nights; children up to five stay free, one per apartment. Standalone ceia is R$699 for adults and R$350 for children aged 6–12.
Fireworks, and Where to Stand for Them
The city's fireworks are the fixed point of the night, and several parties are built around a view of them. Praia Buritis advertises panoramic views of the city's fireworks from its covered terrace in Buritis. Réveillon Privilège at Clube Labareda looks out over the Pampulha lagoon. Réveillon da Orla sits directly on the Lagoa da Pampulha waterfront. If you are at the free celebrations instead, the Praça da Liberdade programme runs to 01:30 with its drone show and videomapping carrying the visual weight of the evening. Wherever you plant yourself, decide before midnight — moving between venues once the fireworks begin is not realistic.
Getting Your Night in Order
Ticketed parties sell through Sympla, Bilheteria Fácil, or directly with the venue, and the free events need no ticket at all. Events spread across the capital — Buritis, Belvedere, Castelo, Estoril — and into Greater BH at São Bento, Nova Lima, Pampulha and Engenho Nogueira, so pick one and build your evening around it rather than trying to sample several. Book the ticketed rooms early; the hotel that runs at full occupancy on New Year's is not the only venue that fills. Then choose your format: an all-inclusive open bar and buffet, an à la carte night, or a place in the crowd at Praça da Liberdade or Praça da Estação.
